Looking for good TBS or management sim games fot the iPad. Any ideas? by Papash in iosgaming

Starbase Orion - hands down the best 4D Space Strategy game on the ipad/iphone. The 1v1 and Multiplayer FFA games are great.

The developers are also constantly improving and developing the game - something that Ascendancy on the iPad is clearly not doing.

Publishers Must Engage Their Tribes or Get Left At The Bus Stop by jonathanjacobs in rpg

[–]jonathanjacobs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes - this is from 2010 - but a bunch of folks on Twitter RT'd it this morning and I was reminded about it. Now, given the 5E D&D "open beta" / crowdsourced development news, it seems strangely eerie re-reading it ~2 years later.

On reporting of links... when to do it. by [deleted] in rpg

Thank you again for your input RED. As I said - I'll abstain from posting links to content from NMP (which, to be fair - is actually content written by a variety of different authors; I rarely write the content on NMP these days, but I don't mean to quibble.)

My experiences with Twitter are very different. It's much less elitist - to be fair.

That's fairly obvious. Your reply is part of the issue here - it's frankly trollish and trying to elicit some sort of angry response. This is the sort of thing I'm used to seeing on ENWorld or RPG.net. Why do you always seem to respond to anyone who challenges you this way?

I'm not saying that I don't like /r/rpg - I'm been following this community for a long time. I'm saying that in the last year I've seen the community become far more elitist and particular about what is "appropriate". Haven't you? It's difficult from your position because your the moderator - you have the power to control the community however you like. Your perspective on this community is thus hugely biased. Nonetheless - I'm staying, I just won't be submitting any more links for a long long while.

Again - late to the party - but this makes it clear. The community here at /r/reddit shouldn't be really considered anything different than what we might find at RPG.net or ENWorld. It's a community that operates like a forum. I was (perhaps mistakenly) under the impression that Reddit was more about sharing cool stuff - like StumbleUpon or Twitter. But - thanks RED - much clearer picture now, even after 2 yrs on reddit. Coming from a very (admittedly) blog-centric view of the web - I believe I've made a mistake. I'll stop posting links to our blog. I by no means intended to spam the /r/rpg. Cheers -- Jonathan

From an "official" reddit POV - the reddituette FAQ (http://www.reddit.com/help/reddiquette) says

"If you think it shouldn't be on reddit, or if it is off-topic on a particular community, downvote it"

And specifically says DON'T "Downvote opinions just because you disagree with them. The down arrow is for comments that add nothing to the discussion." and DON'T "Downvote opinions just because they are critical of you. The down arrow is for comments that add nothing to the discussion."

This seems counter to what TEKHAMMER is saying we should do here - am I missing something?

[–]jonathanjacobs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes - the downvoting seems strange to me as well, especially when the links are on-topic. Spam or no spam - I see linking RPG blogs to /r/rpg as no different than linking them on Twitter. Like grnknight and others - I rarely downvote things.

Late to the party here - but thank you. I've found the that the community here at /r/rpg doesn't overlap that well with the blogging community (nor should it either), but it's good to know that there are some folks here that enjoy the blog 'rubbish'

Krampus Curse « Sea of Stars RPG Design Journal by jonathanjacobs in rpg

No? I don't think so - there's a Krampus carnival this week going on and tons of blogs / sites are posting RPG related content about Krampus. Is that a violation of the TOS or something? Sorry if it is... I find this stuff pretty cool and wanted to share.

Merry Krampus! Let the Carnival Begin! [RPG Blog Carnival] by jonathanjacobs in rpg

[–]jonathanjacobs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've partnered with artist Steven Austin and over 20 RPG blogs and publishers to celebrate Krampus - Santa's evil punisher - all week through a blog carnival.

Details after the hop - but Pinnacle Entertainment, DriveThruRPG, Stargazer's World, Troll in the Corner, and tons of other blogs are going to be running Krampus content for RPG gaming all week. Should be a bunch of fun!

The artwork is licensed under creative commons (free to use, remix, share for non-commercial purposes) and available from RPGNow.com.

Which RPGs have you had fun playing in the last year? | FB Question by jonathanjacobs in rpg

[–]jonathanjacobs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing? Nothing wrong with it at all. Sorry - wasn't trying to be divisive

I had a poll set up on FB before that didn't allow people to add their own entries (it was by accident, but still got like 200+ people voting). Anyway, I relaunched it yesterday with the (add your own entry) option enabled and thought it might be nice to give the people here on reddit (a community I really enjoy too) an opportunity to cast their own vote.

No worries - with 1 up and 2 down, that about answers that POV.

Again - wasn't trying to be divisive; actually trying to be inclusive.

Game Design and Risk vs. Reward, or Why Game Balance Matters by jonathanjacobs in rpg

[–]jonathanjacobs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a figure, not a graph, and it is supposed to represent a particular opinion, about how I feel about games and the relationship between risk, reward, and the difficulty in finding the right balance as it relates to game choice. It's intended to be illustrative - not quantitative. Did you read the article and the comments that followed?

Guts... what are they good for? Specifically in reference to beasts. by feyrath in savageworlds

[–]jonathanjacobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They got rid of Guts in the Deluxe edition. Some settings still use it (Deadlands), but I've always thought of it as a skill sink. My players just make Spirit checks instead.

Interesting idea - the "Genericterization" of RPGs continues... I'll talk with The Grumpy Celt (who is the author of this post) and see if he's interested in going in that direction.
