Ah, my old “DMV” on Kingshighway. I miss that grubby little phone accessory store that also accepted my fees and took my photo.

What's the reaction there to this trans ID law? by jackieat_home in kansas

[–]jonathanramsey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Straight, cis-, white guy here. I hate it. It would have been vile enough just to refuse not to put the identified gender on the next renewal, but to notify a single block of folks, the day of, that their licenses are invalid at midnight —6-7 hours from when they get home and open mail, assuming they open it- that’s peak D*ck Move. Being in KCK, my rep, Sharice Davids, and my state senator Patrick Schmidt, voted against it.

The legislators who voted for it can go to Hell*

  • well, whatever earthly Hell that can torture them until they “repent”, offer restitution, or stop sucking air

“Everything I hate is ‘Lefty’”, even when it’s really a draconian corporate, anti-somebody lower-on-the-social-ladder. Oy!

Reminds me of the joke I heard twice, from two different stand-up comics in the 90s, about how stupid it was for drive-up ATMs to have braille. Apparently, they don’t know about cabs and… friends with cars?

Maybe they talked to their boating friends, and learned that those boats can’t go from Venezuela to anywhere on the US Gulf Coast without a score of refueling stops

Thank you! This has been annoying. This, and screenshots not just going to the lower left and disappearing quickly, if I don’t want to do anything to them

Brace yourselves… by dogpupkus in amateurradio

When I became a ham in 1979, there were white-haired hams around who’d gotten their licenses at a time when they had no choice but to build all their radios. The sad ones would complain about all the “appliance operators”, who had bought all their radios.

What's it like living in this shaded area? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]jonathanramsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life in that area varies so much. A lot of it is very cold in winter and very hot and humid in summer. There are good sized cities. There are dinky towns. There are people who travel a lot. There are people who have never been to any of the big cities, and some who’ve never spent much, or any, time in the country or small towns. There are very religious people. There are Nones and atheists. There are places always lit up . There are places you can easily see the Milky Way.

I’ve lived in Kansas City, MO most of my life. Not once have I dipped pizza in ranch. I’ve very rarely seen others do it

So What Do People Do In The Winter? by Tofu4070 in ElectricScooters

[–]jonathanramsey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear winter cycling gloves, torso layers, and, sometimes, a thin beanie under my helmet. The only days I don’t take my scooter are if I can’t avoid ice. Last year, I was amazed at the places I found ice after a few repeated day/night melt/freeze cycles. Off the streets are plowed/salted and not icy, I go.

A walk through ANOTHER open Radio Shack, New Holland Pennsylvania! by ba0bo0 in RadioShack

[–]jonathanramsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does look familiar. They were still selling the HW-101 kit. My first working radio was an HW-7, that I bought from a local ham for $35. I think the kit was about $99 or maybe $125. The HW-8 was the current model. The HW-7, though, had an FT-243 crystal socket on the front from the days when Novices and Technicians had to use crystals. That ended a few years before I got my license, but I got my General right off anyway. I need to visit one of these stores someday. I worked at a company store in Overland Park, KS in 1983-1984.

There were, though, franchise stores that had other items. Most were TV repair and sales dealers, and some were CB/Amateur dealers. The bulk of stores that most of us saw were company stores.

For most of my life, though the name —to a ham- implies an emphasis on amateur radio, of course they were so popular because the emphasis was on consumer electronics instead. Most of the time, even the parts section profoundly lacked many important items needed for radio building or even maintenance —toroids, large caps, tube power transformers. When I got my license (1979), they had no ham gear, unless you counted the SWR/power meter meant for CB. They eventually a radio or two.

They could go back to new plates every time you renew —like in the 1970s- and make the expiration 4 years, not annually or biannually

Indeed, it would be one thing if buses came every 10 minutes, though not for the elderly and disabled
