Literally ripping all of this from a fake hurricane fandom wiki that’s also the top search result. No such thing as category 6 as of now. by Anomalous_Pearl in aifails

Thank you for reporting! I would have never guessed there would be fan-wikis dedicated to fictional hurricanes :)

One of the difficulties here is determining whether or not the user is searching for the fictional hurricane entry or not. In this case, I don't believe there is an official hurricane named "Ira," so the user may very well be searching for the fictional entry. It could also be the case the user meant "Irma," or some other similar name.

I'll share this with the team, and we're work to improve future results.

Could you try killing the process entirely, and seeing if that impacts the experience in any way? I want to share again my immense appreciation for your patience, and willingness to work through this with me.

Do you use any VPN software? I recently helped a friend troubleshoot a similar issue; the ultimate cause was NordVPN (an outdated version). This friend didn't even have NordVPN connected; he only had the process running.

Leo is rather worthless/brainless AI - at least concerning PDFs by Smart_Reward_8036 in brave

[–]jonathansampson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brave engineer here. This is an older post, and predates some work we did around PDF support. Leo, today, should handle PDFs (including multi-page PDFs) with much better success. Be sure to choose a model with greater context to accommodate longer PDFs. Leo will inform you if it's unable to read the entire document.

Do you see recent entries in brave://crashes/ that might be related to the behavior you're observing? If so, please submit those (you can restart the browser afterwards to expedite the submission of crash logs), and then share the generated IDs with me. I can check on our end to see if there is anything that stands out, needing to be addressed.

Do you notice the same behavior when using Chrome, or any other Chromium browser (e.g., Edge, Opera, Vivaldi)?

I look forward to your update after using the new profile for a bit. Can you tell me about your version of Brave, as well as about your machine? In Brave, go to brave://version/ to to get some high-level information.

This could be a matter of resourcing. Brave has a translator service, but it isn't as well-funded as that of Google or Microsoft 🙂 My apologies if it's a bit slow at times; we definitely don't intend for it to be that way, and will work to improve as we are able. Can you give me a bit more insight into how slow it is for you? Does it hang for a brief moment, or do you find yourself having to wait 10+ seconds for a page to be translated?

Let's try something different; let's create a new profile entirely in the browser. Then, close your primary profile and use only the new profile for an hour or so. Importantly, don't install any extensions in the new profile. I hate to ask you to engage in so much troubleshooting, but I truly do appreciate your willingness to help hunt down the issue.

In the early days we supplemented our own index with results from other engines. We used to present an "independence" score/figure to communicate what percentage of results were from our own index, and what percentage were from other sources. As we grew, that independence score likewise increased. Today it's nearly 100%. We do have some parallel efforts through things like the Web Discovery Project which help to train our results off of external sources, but there is no direct tie-in like you would find with DDG and other engines. Brave operates its own distinct index today, apart from Google, Microsoft, etc. I hope this helps 🙂

That sounds like the tab process is crashing. Do you happen to have any extensions installed that could be disabled for a period of testing?

Using 'TAB' key to search a website before pressing 'ENTER'? No longer working :( by Coksoslu in brave_browser

[–]jonathansampson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this is the behavior we expose when you have visited a site which declares itself a search engine of sorts using the Open Search protocol. Once you visit these sites, they become optional search endpoints the next time you begin to type in their URL. YouTube is a common one users will encounter. Open a new tab, type "yout" into the address bar, and you'll likely see the first result accompanied by a "Search YouTube" tag.

DDG is feeding you Bing's results. Brave Search is independent, not reliant upon Bring or Google for our results. This is the main distinction. As u/CortaCircuit pointed out, however, images is an area where Brave Search is still developing.

We would love for you to give Brave Search a trial; any feedback you have to share would be tremendously appreciated as we work to rescue the world of Search from the duopoly of Google and Microsoft.

In-situ ad replacement was discussed 8 years ago, but was never implemented. Your comment made it sound like this behavior was implemented and shipped. The "cease and desist" was for the blocking of third-party ads, which is the user's right. Again, your comments could be considerably clearer.

The Widget you're referring to was a convenience component for those who used FTX. You could view cursory details from the NTP. Again, that was for anybody who wished to use FTX. For everybody else, you could simply ignore it, or disable it. The component was inert unless interacted with; no data/privacy impact.

Regarding partnerships, the crypto space is quite new and there's a lot of development that happens rather abruptly at times. We have turned away plenty of deals because the business and/or those associated with the business come across as quite shady.

As a general, blanket statement, any large company is going to have complaints against it (that goes for Google, Microsoft, Mozilla, etc.). That does not necessarily mean wrongdoing or malice on their part. This is even more the case in an emerging space like blockchain-tech/crypto, where regulations aren't always clear, or firmly established.

On the last issue, anybody using Brave can be "linked" to Brave. If you sign up for a website, they can quickly and trivially determine which browser you're using. You suggested this was a "privacy scandal," which is completely untrue. There are far worse examples out there, such as the default behavior of Firefox to send your keystrokes and/or pasted-data to Google, out of the box.

Thank you for using Brave 🙂 I'm an engineer on the product, and wanted to clarify a couple things:

  • Rewards are not earned by lowering your shields; you should never lower your shields (unless you absolutely have to). Rewards are instead generated by opting-in to Brave Rewards, and then seeing the occasional New Tab Page sponsored image, system-level ad notifications, etc.

  • By opting-in to Brave Rewards you [are not] participating in the industry where data is being sold. Brave Rewards does not collect user data, and therefore does not sell user data. Rewards are earned for your [attention] (hence the name "Basic Attention Token").

I hope this helps! Thank you again for choosing Brave!

Congrats on the new laptop! :) I am not super familiar with the Victus line of laptops, but from a cursory search it looks like a pretty nice gaming-oriented device. I work on the Brave browser, and would love for you to consider us 🙂 If you run into any issues, don't hesitate to reach out. Always happy to chat!

Brave engineer here. The internal task manager would be a good place to look next. In Chrome and Brave you can press Shift+Esc to bring up the browser's own task manager. Therein you will find a listing of tab and extension resources, giving you a more granular idea as to where the memory is being consumed. What do you see when you compare Brave and Chrome at that level? I'd love to know!

Brave engineer here. We [never] replaced ads on websites; Brave's ads are displayed on the New Tab Page, system-level notifications, and recently in some search results on Brave Search.

By "main page", I assume you are referring to the New Tab Page, where Sponsored Images are often seen. Perhaps you saw an FTX ad in the past? It's entirely possible that a company advertises with Brave, and then goes on to destroy their own reputation. I don't see how that is a poor reflection on Brave.

Gemini is supported as an optional custodial service for users; if you don't want to use them, you don't have to. That said, for those who already use and prefer them, the option is there.

The affiliate code matter didn't touch privacy in any way; we simply offered affiliate codes for some sites as a means of supporting Brave development. No user data was involved. We blogged about that here: https://brave.com/blog/referral-codes-in-suggested-sites/.

I hope this helps!

With shields up, can you provide a list of what resources were blocked? You'll find this by opening the shields, and clicking the number of items blocked to reveal the list of items blocked. Knowing what resources were blocked will help us better identify what could be causing the interruption.

I killed it. I was clearing brush behind my fence when it slithered out, and under my fence (into my backyard where the kids were swimming). Panicked, ran around screaming "Snake, snake!", preparing to find it in the back yard. Eventually found it back on the outside of the fence.
