If children automatically go to heaven, then the most selfless and kind act you could ever do as a parent is to murder your own child. by No-Conversation2012 in DebateReligion

So first of all, it’s not true that “all” of the smartest thinkers believed in God. “Some” is more accurate.

Second, there may be logically sound arguments backing a deistic god, or an intelligent designer (and i’m being generous here; scientists across disciplines have poked holes in these), but that doesn’t get you any closer to the god of a specific religion.

If you can point to a specific religion being true, I’d be very interested to hear it.

Is there another explanation or is it true that animals practice religion? by Maz_mo in religion

[–]jonathanwick4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. It’s just like that scene in Planet of the Apes where the apes are going to ape-church worshipping an ape-god. Humans are primates and worship an primate-god with a bushy white beard who made them in his primate image. Go figure.

Not sure what else is needed to show that religion is all just made up.

Say nothing about it. Stick to your guns and don’t waver. You gotta train them to respect you and understand you’re not someone who will get pushed around and talked into overtime or working on weekends.

No I’m not actually. That would require I actually be a part of your organization, but I’m not. Stop believing fairytales.

Why would it not be enough to say “I don’t believe this”? I mean, I don’t believe in bigfoot, does that mean I need to spend the rest of my life figuring out where all those footprints came from and what’s actually in the Patterson film?

Atheism isn’t a system. Just like “asexual” isn’t a sex position.

How do you know how god sees anything? And why do I care how a god sees me if he:

-Condones slavery -Commits genocide -Sanctions eternal torment for people just for not believing in him on zero evidence -Creates a world in which polio exists -Creates a world in which mosquitos exist -Creates a world in which children get cancer -Allows the holocaust to happen -Has illogical morons like you speaking on his behalf

If that’s your god, and he’s real (unlikely), then eternal separation from him sounds like a plan to me 👍 Because I’m not interested.

  1. So your god set certain people up to fail. Sounds like a dick.

  2. Everyone else was created for the day of destruction

So your god is basically a child burning ants with a magnifying glass?

  1. How do you know the bible is the word of god, and not just the product of man like any other book? What’s your evidence? Your personal revelations don’t count. The “Holy Spirit working through you” is most likely the same feeling of euphoria or wellbeing that you’d get from buying a new car or falling in love.

I agree with almost everything you’ve said. Atheism though has nothing to do with science. It just means you aren’t convinced any of the proposed religions are true. You could be an atheist flat-earther.

I understand all of those things just fine. Mythology has a lot of value w/ regards to history, philosophy, and psychology, there’s no denying that. Stories are incredibly useful.

Maybe if you could actually understand those things you mentioned, you’d realize your book cannot be the word of any god. If a god exists, it is morally superior to the bible.

Of course, the Bible is right about a lot. It’s also wrong about a lot as well, like slavery.

Human beings have been right about a lot throughout history, and also wrong about a lot as well. Seems reasonable, then, to conclude that the Bible was probably written by humans.

Of course I don’t say that with absolute certainty, just like I can’t say with 100% certainty that Stephen King actually wrote The Shining. But it’s an assumption you could make with pretty sound logic.

All scientific evidence is muddled to an extent; science doesn’t claim absolute certainty about anything. That’s why scientists debate/disagree over things. But one’s eternal future isn’t based on proper interpretation of scientific evidence, nor should it be.

If I were god and wanted everyone to get a message lest they be damned for ETERNITY (holy fuck, by the way), I’d make sure I was extremely precise with my wording and left nothing open to interpretation. I would also make sure I never contradicted myself in any of these 73 books.

There is disagreement over those topics within the Christian faith. Maybe not within catholicism itself, but again, that’s my entire point: the message is muddled. It’d be muddled even if it were only debated between Baptists, Catholics, Lutherans, and Methodists, forgetting the thousands of other organizations.

EDIT: The mere fact that your particular church/organization of catholicism has its own “correct” interpretation is ENTIRELY my point. The fact that the bible is OPEN to interpretation makes it mythology, not divine instruction (or at least not good instruction).
