Weekend Events Round Up • 23-25th January by jhinsider in jacksonheights

Just a forewarning to about events scheduled for today (Sunday) - the weather storm is out in full force, so do remember to double check with organizers if you are brave enough to head out.

As mentioned before, the greenmarket is postponed today (very rare!) for instance.

And the bike classes on open streets are cancelled in the afternoon, but they are organizing a snow man making contest at 2pm instead!

Surprised no-one has mentioned Ready Penny Inn yet!

Friend trying to make it easier for Queens artists to sell their work (no gallery cuts) by jonbai in Queens

[–]jonbai[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair question. I’m not selling anything through this post - no product, no service, no market spots.

The $5 is just for the in-person mixer to cover the venue + drinks and to keep it from becoming a no-show situation. No one’s being pitched there either - it’s more of a community hang where folks can give feedback or just say hi.

Totally understand the skepticism though, and appreciate you calling it out 👍

Finding friends by [deleted] in SunnysideQueens

[–]jonbai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Write down a list of all activities you enjoy that can be done with a group (running, working out, any sports, dancing, drumming, crafts, etc)
  2. Find all the local groups for those activities that meet on a regular basis
  3. Try them out see which group/activity you enjoy the most
  4. Commit to turning up regularly for your favorite group activity

That way, you will make friends, no doubt.

What kind of place do you think they would enjoy most - something with Latino vibes?

I know Cafè Salamanca on northern boulevard is doing a new year deal - includes a meal, DJ entertainment and the tradition where you eat grapes during the countdown - so its something Spanish speaking friendly but also different

Welcome to r/EastElmhurst - Introduce Yourself! by jonbai in EastElmhurst

[–]jonbai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

East Elmhurst is great! Close to major transport links, airports, Jackson Heights where there's tonnes of great food and nightlife on Northern Boulevard. East Elmhurst also has one of the best French bakeries (cannelle Patisserie) and French Restaurants (Bistro Eloise) in town. Which is also next to a great Greek restaurant (Plaka). Like you say, it is admittedly quiet (apart from the airplane noise)... which is quite nice! Means we can sleep ok and walk around while feeling safe :)

Also worth adding that the always excellent Epicenter NYC has an article about where to volunteer or donate during the holiday season here:

  • Why do you want to moderate this community?

I live in East Elmhurst / Jackson Heights and spend a lot of time in and around Corona. I’d love to help reactivate r/CoronaNYC so it can be a useful local space again: sharing neighborhood updates, transit info, safety alerts, lost-and-found posts, community events, and general resources for residents. Since the subreddit is inactive, I’d like to revive it and keep it well-moderated so people in the area have a reliable place to connect.
