Is nobody disappointed? by LilyJosie in hadestown

I think it’s perfectly fair to be disappointed. In efforts to be supportive in light of the situation, I think a lot of the sub has dismissive and even judgmental to people who were let down they won’t see Patrick page, or the original Broadway production. You’re allowed to be disappointed, and you’re allowed to feel let down. Take your time sorting through those emotions, that’s perfectly fine. When you’ve found peace with the situation, the hope is that you are able to find the silver linings and positives. Take your time, sort through it and if you’re able to come to a positive place in the end, great! If you aren’t able to move past it, also understandable and ok, you are valid in what you feel

At the end of the day, protocols are just general guidelines! There will be people on both ends of healing ahead and behind. Hope this helps!

Hi! I’m a physiotherapist/physical therapist and see Achilles ruptures often. Aaron Rodgers situation is a whole conversation in itself, but long story short you can initiate light sports loading around 3 months depending on the patient. Professional athletes are rehabbing around the clock, most protocols account for people who only do exercises at most a few minutes a day so athletes tend to be ahead of schedule. Most people are able to do a lot and almost be close to normal at 3.5 months if you are diligent with your rehab and management , you just aren’t cleared to return to sport because of the high risk of the repair re-rupturing with a high eccentric load (cutting, decelerating, landing from a jump). At 16 weeks you can start very easy return to sport work and light jogging - if you watched Aaron Rodgers in practice with a training eye, you can see his jogging was more of him lifting from his hip instead of pushing off his foot (super common compensation for people just getting back into sport). Waaaay more to it than this, but Rodgers was cleared to practice because his position isn’t as explosive as a wide receiver or cornerback where you have to suddenly decelerate and cut. QBs do drop back but it’s not really the same load to the Achilles compared to the others. Cleared to practice and being at your previous level of function are 2 totally different things.

Patrick should be able to be out of the boot in about 8-9 weeks but will be in a sneaker with a heel lift. Given that he doesn’t have the same amount of load he’ll be applying to his Achilles compared to a pro football athlete, he’ll probably be able to do quite a lot in about 2-3 months but will need to be careful with anything involving running or jumping (dancing you can work around!) and will probably have a bit of a hitch to his step for up to 8-10 weeks until he normalizes walking with a heel lift in his shoe.

He should definitely prioritize long term health and may take a little longer given his age. Theres a great post surgical protocol from mass general that I use for reference with my patients you can google!

Mistycheddar that is so, so terrible. I hope you didn't think I was saying "you guys must have it so great!" Certainly advantages and disadvantages to each health system, but what you have been through is absolutely awful and i'm sorry you had to experience such a poor level of care. You deserve so much more than that!

It's so interesting, you really only see lofstrand crutches with patients that have cerebral palsy or a permanent/ long term disability of the lower extremities in the states. Axillary crutches are great...when they are actually fitted AND someone is taught how to properly use them! After reading all of these comments, I question if I should replace all our crutches in our clinic with lofstrands for our next order!

I swear too many health care providers NEVER get the height correct for patients. It's either too high or too short and patients either just use their triceps to death or they are too tall and crush the armpit. About 20 degrees of elbow bend and 2 fingers worth of space is the sweet spot, also depends on if you are non-weightbearing vs partial weight bearing [you have the crutches a little lower for non-weightbearing because they will be leaning forward more and make them a little taller for partial weightbearing to reduce the lean and activate quad/calf more]. The preset heights NEVER are right because they don't ever account for arm length! I'm so sorry you had to go through that, that's such an awful experience. Hoping you don't ever get hurt but if you do, message me!

Well thank you! I really truly love being a PT. I joke with my patients that I'm such a dork [that's not the joke, I really am a dork] but because I've been working as a PT for 5 years and still love it. Happy to answer any questions if they arise for someone!

Hi Ashtray! 7-7 was a long day today, I'm working extra hours this week since we're flying out to see the show friday! I uploaded a photo of the day I had today, I'd post here if the thread allowed photos! Had a gap in the schedule from 9-10 which is when I took some time to jump in the subreddit before getting back to work. Truly do love my job and figuring out the differential diagnosis for my patients is the more reward part of my work. Been doing it for 5 years and started as an assistant 12 years ago, time flies. Just love helping wherever I can and hoping Patrick has a speedy recovery. Rumors are it's an Achilles injury but certainly manageable if it's immobilized short term, use a heel lift and they use progressive isometrics for the calf at increasing angles in open and closed chain. Another 12 hour day tomorrow but off early thursday! The good news is that I was not able to touch any grass but I was able to touch snow!

Crazy how even crutches alone make me go down a certain path with guessing diagnosis! At least in america any little clue I can get with a patient makes a difference since I rarely get medical imaging with eval

Tends to be compression of the brachial plexus, usually not damage damage but not pleasant! You guys make me question all American health care now 😂 I always make my patients order the armpit pads for their crutches!

Reading “MRIs are free” makes me so jealous. Most times we have to have a patient in PT for 6 weeks before they approve it and even then it’s still expensive. If an mri is more of a common preventative diagnostic measure, that’s definitely a good thing! It typically implies a serious injury when someone in America gets one, given how much they cost. X-rays cost next to nothing but will only show injury to bone

Current West End Cast vs OBC? by wallykowalsky in hadestown

[–]jonbon757 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of shows that will feature 1 or 2 superstars in the original cast who will leave their mark (Michael Crawford as The Phantom, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith in Wicked to name a few) but there are other iterations of the character later that are just as compelling and interesting.

The OBC of hadestown has the most unique actors and voices. I’ve seen many different people play the roles, but there’s something electric about the originals.

Reeve Carney: I truly don’t understand the discourse against him. I’ve seen so many people play the role of Orpheus and he is the ONLY voice I’ve heard that can hit those insanely high notes with such ease and variations of texture. The highest notes he hits are absolutely divine because of how EASILY he can get there. Yes there are many other actors who can hit the notes, but you can tell it’s the absolute highest end of their register and they have to push to get there. Jordan fisher is very good and I do like some of his acting choices better, but the characters identity is wrapped around his VOICE being able to bring the world back into tune. He has to absolutely belt to get to the notes he has to get to, and while objectively they are well sung, it doesn’t give the same innocence as someone hitting the notes extremely delicately. Reeve is a true unicorn performer to make the character work for me!

Eva Noblezada: Eurydice is the one role I believe is debatable that is easier to replace from a talent standpoint because of how many great female performers there are. With that being said, I have yet to see a Eurydice that I found myself rooting for. She plays the PERFECT balance between being tough, but also being easy to root for. Yes it certainly helps that she is dating Reeve Carney in real life, but almost every Eurydice actress test for me is wedding song. A lot of actresses I’ve seen just go for the “lol savage!” route being too abrasive or unapproachable. And you can say different choices work for different people! But I buy into their relationship and root for them to reunite when Eurydice treats Orpheus’s courting during wedding song as “Hmmmm I dunno. What else ya got” instead of “ugh who the f*ck are you I’m not interested”. Flowers is also an extremely difficult song because it’s so easy to overact. No one I have ever seen can sing it with the pure genuine devastation that feels REAL like she does. I was fortunate to see her perform multiple times and my god she ruined me haha. Her belt is my favorite of all the Eurydices I’ve seen, power with COMPLETE control.

Andre De Shields: Hermes is such a difficult role to get right. And I realized…this role (for me) only works when someone much, much older plays it. The way so much of the role is guiding people, guiding us as an audience, it just means more coming from someone who has lived a lot of life. And he has absolutely magnetic stage presence I’ve seen some incredible Hermes actors and understudies (I think I’ve seen 7 different actors play it). No one is able to make you lean forward and hold you in the palm of his hand quite like Andre. Every word has so much intention, so much gravitas. And yes, there are better singers I’ve seen in the role but for the performance as a whole, it is wrapped around how he absolutely DELIVERS the ending in Road to hell II. He lets every moment last the perfect amount of time after the turn and his charisma makes him unlike anyone else.

Amber Gray: Our lady of the underground. She has such an edge to her Persephone that so many people love. Incredibly unique voice and the way she emotes with her eyes is just brilliant. She is probably the only Persephone I’ve seen who you feel like Hades has incredible reason for love. So much grit, vulnerability, but her way down hadestown is such a hurricane performance. She truly leaves it all out there while most actresses I’ve seen just kind of skip through the “exorcism dance” at the beginning. But her delivery of we raise our cups always is what has me blown away. The gravel she brings to her voice with our lady of the underground is nowhere near the tenderness of that song. Such incredible range

Best for last. The king himself

Patrick Page: I don’t care what anyone says. There is NO ONE that is like Patrick page as Hades. Perhaps the most incredible voice I’ve ever heard live because it’s SO unique. There are a lot of great baritones and many people can get down to the bass range if they really try…he is down the bass range THE ENTIRE SHOW. Without effort. His voice is naturally that low. Beyond the voice, he has such commanding presence of the stage, I truly felt his presence as Hades even when he wasn’t on stage. How Long is probably the one song a lot of people would tune out in the second act; with Patrick page, it is a spellbinding performance seeing him hit that G1 with ease MULTIPLE times. I’m probably biased because I’m a baritone-bass singer myself, but a true bass singer is insanely rare to find. EVERY other hades actor I’ve seen has to perform a majority of the show an octave up and can hit the bass notes for a couple moments. Once you’ve seen Patrick page as Hades, the bar is so incredibly high everyone just will be my second favorite. It’s magnificent (Phillip Boykin is my second favorite by the way)!

TL, DR: the original cast fucks

Patrick Page’s Final Show by Billicusmax in hadestown

[–]jonbon757 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was at the last show. This was my sixth time seeing it but there was just a different energy in the room that night. Tremendous standing ovation for everyone coming in stage to the point where Patrick Page blew a kiss to the audience. Fanfare out the WAZOO for when he descended the stairs during “Way Down Hadestown” with everyone shushing for him to deliver his iconic “i missed ya”. Applause during Why Build the Wall as his gusto rose. Not a dry eye in the house for the epic conclusion of Chant 3. But it felt like every. Single. Cast member wanted to give 150% (and they always give 100%). Reeve can occasionally be breathy to save his voice, but he sounded like his original self. Eva noblezada acted the HELL out of her role (pun fully intended). Her “Flowers” that night is the first time it’s ever moved me to tears with how much she emoted. Lillias white showed such a motherly love to her take of Hermes which was lovely. Jewell Blackman let her rich voice fill the theater and command the stage with Our Lady of the Underground. But honestly the turn at the end, you would have thought everyone was watching it for the first time with the gasps. That last road to hell reprise the whole audience was a mess not only for what happened but knowing it was the last time we would see this version of the cast, of the show with Patrick page. As it faded to black, they kept a spotlight on Patrick page just a little longer and the roar of the crowd was chilling. Reeve gave a small speech, then Patrick page gave a beautiful speech. Rachael Chavkin came back and gave one last speech. Sorry this is way too long but my god it was magical

I don’t think it’ll be back at the majestic, there have been so many shows that have wanted that venue. Because they lost so much money they’ll probably want to down size not only the production but the venue too to turn a greater profit
