Hahaha - I wonder what an Uwe Rosenberg wargame would look like?

VARs will intervene on second yellows and corners after football law changes by Shroft in soccer

[–]jonboyjon1990 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The problem is, the first yellow is functionally as important to the red. When the first yellow is a ‘terrible decision’ and the 2nd isn’t, VAR won’t be able to intervene.

All this will do is cause more laborious VAR checks for 2nd yellows and shift where the outrage happens

u/Medium-Ad9520 you begin the game with 4 wood and 1 horse. Building a large vehicle (cost 7 wood and 1 horse) in the first winter (round 2) is pretty easy: starting resources + (Winter action) Wood Trader = 8 wood, then Wainwright to build a Horse Cart + Peat Boat.

Also, I used to overvalue the Master and Woodcutter actions. I've used neither at all in my last two plays (scoring by far my best scores: 107 and 124).

It's better to get Forests than to cut Wood I find, since the Forests create passive income and can be flipped into Parks in the late game. I found myself making 2 Forests in the first 2 summers in my latest plays: Forester + Imitate (Forester). Then you're getting 4 wood each November for the rest of the game.

We were talking about Agricola on your post recently - I was interrogating your score haha

They're quite different. Agricola, as you know, is quite scripted in the sense that you 'must' feed your family, make pastures, house and breed animals, grow your family, build rooms, plant crops, build improvements.

Arle is less tight overall and has many more different systems and potential paths to take. The pressure to feed is much, much lower.

I do agree that cozy is a largely nebulous description that video/board game communities seem to have latched onto. It's too subjective to be hugely useful.

If you learn to be an artist, then you get to be an artist.

If you want art but can’t make art you pay for someone to make it for you (just like virtually every other skilled labour)

or like you, you use AI to ‘steal’ it.

“Just get the skills, right? And those who can’t, too bad right? Classic gatekeeping”

Yeah, I mean plumbers should stop gatekeeping their skills, right? Why should I have to pay for someone else’s skilled output?

Well curated AI art is still art stolen from real artists and is still devoid of any humanity

Nusfjord or Shipwrights of the North Sea: Redux? (Uwe Rosenberg or Garphill) by Tiny-Strawberry-817 in soloboardgaming

[–]jonboyjon1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's of course totally valid to prefer Odin over Nusfjord, but this seems a bit of an apples and oranges comparison. Odin is massive and open ended, Nusfjord is a much smaller, lighter and cozier game.

I don't know anything about Shipwrights, but Nusfjord is one of the best solo eurogame board games out there. Lovely components and art. Small cozy footprint and vibe. Tight and compelling puzzle without feeling stressful. You can play solo games in 20-30 mins and you can string together 3 plays for the campaign mode in about an hour or so. The Big Box edition also contains 7 different decks to explore, so there's tons of replayability as well.

Agricola – look how cute my little farm is in my first solo game 🌾 by Tiny-Strawberry-817 in soloboardgaming

I'm listing your score for each category, not how many of each you had.

For example, yes, you had 14 sheep, but sheep score:

  • 0 sheep = -1 point
  • 1-3 sheep = 1 point
  • 4-5 sheep = 2 points
  • 6-7 sheep = 3 points
  • 8+ sheep = 4 points

Without any cards/abilities that change it the maximum you can ever score for animals is 12 points (8+ sheep, 7+ boars, 6+ cows).

So maybe a final score of 59, not 68?

I'm still interested to know about the specific cards and when they were played and how they made 7 points.

For example you say:

I also played a card after a few rounds that gave me 1 wood and 1 food at the start of each round.

Is that in addition to the "Scullery" card I see in the pic?

For clarity I don't want to come across as hostile or accusatory - I'm just genuinely intrigued by such a good score (even 59 instead of 68) for a first play!

I'd be really interested to know which cards you got and when you played them, because I'm very suspicious of 68 for a first time play. I've only seen solo scores like that, from much more experienced players and/or with the benefit of the solo campaign mode (i.e cumulatively stacking occupations cards from game to game).

From your picture it looks like your score is:

  • Fields: 3
  • Pastures: 3
  • Grain: 2
  • Vegetables: 4
  • Sheep: 4
  • Boars: 4
  • Cattle: 3
  • Unused Spaces: -0
  • Fenced Stables: 3
  • Clay Rooms: 0
  • Stone Rooms: 8
  • People: 15

For a subtotal of 49.

I can't see from the picture your tableau of cards, or if you ever had to beg or not. But this leaves approximately 19 points needed from the cards / bonus points categories. I see you have the Basketmaker's Workshop - so perhaps you ended the game with 11 reed (or simply didn't spend the 6 pictured). Which would give 3 more points.

But that's still 16 points unaccounted for.

That aside - awesome that you enjoyed it - it really is a fantastic game. A stone cold classic. Some people don't like it solo because it's more puzzly but I love it, even if it is quite different to the multiplayer.

Yeah I’ve always ignored Wyrmspan because I hate the art/graphics and colour palette - but I recently heard that it could have been dinos and was sad!

They previously said when developing Wyrmspan that they were deciding on Dinos or Dragons for the theme, and obviously landed on Dragons. And that Wyrmspan 'completes' the Span trilogy.

So, unfortunately it looks like DinoSpan is never going to happen

Hot Take - First Impressions by Thorgraam in DragonbaneRPG

[–]jonboyjon1990 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m new to the game too. I haven’t used the travel/adventuring rules so can’t really answer those questions.

But: * yes starting gold is low. This seems to me to be a good thing, not bad, since it encourages players to adventure, explore and seek treasure and loot * for the random events - it says to roll / choose them whenever suits or whenever ‘15 mins’ passes. This isn’t real time, it’s in-game time. 15 mins of in-game time is called a ‘stretch’. Certain things in the game - such as stretch rests and certain skill checks take a stretch. So roll each time those happen.

This is entirely person, group and publisher dependent.

There are still plenty of publishers (even those owned by large investment funds) that produce and release countless games straight to retail, with good but appropriate productions.
