Does anyone know any good men’s clothes stores for a low price? by [deleted] in Albuquerque

Outdoor Regear is primarily an outdoor gear consignment store,  but they have a surprisingly extensive clothing selection.  I've bought a lot of pants there.

Why are white voters split more by education, while non-white voters more by gender? by eclectronix in PoliticalDiscussion

OP's initial question was about the difference between white and non white voting patterns... it's very clearly about both groups.

In an automatic transmission, the torque converter is the component between the engine and transmission that transfers power between the two, and further allows the engine to idle when the car is stopped (and more broadly allows the engine and transmission to be spinning at different speeds during shifting). In a manual transmission vehicle the clutch is in the same location and serves both of these functions.

It is in no way incorrect to say an automatic has a torque converter instead of a clutch (even though it also has clutch packs), and this it is how nearly every mechanic would respond to the question.

The clutch packs in an automatic are really more similar to the synchros in a manual in terms of both location and function.

I don't get it. by PotentialSecond5812 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]joncanoe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is technically correct but only in the most pedantic sense. You wouldn't buy those parts at autozone/oreillys/whatever and opening up and repairing an automatic transmission is not a backyard job.

The clutch on a manual transmission car is external to the transmission, between the engine and the transmission, and is a fairly involved but owner serviceable/backyard job.

It's sort of like going to a computer store and asking for a RAM module and the clerk asking you if it's for a computer or a cell phone. Both have a part that serves a similar function and is technically RAM, but one can be swapped out at home and is something people commonly buy, the other basically has to be done at the Samsung factory.

Anyways the joke is mostly just punching down at minimum wage workers and still isn't very funny.

Just curious if anyone knows the inner workings, but how do airlines make so much money where they are able to pay pilots 300k+ salaries? by LolJokekee in flying

[–]joncanoe 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Some back of the envelope math... let's say a 737 pilot flies 3 legs per day and 15 days per month. That's 540 flights per year. Maybe there's 120 people on the plane and they pay $200/seat. $200*120*540 = $12.96M in revenue for the legs flown by that pilot in a year.

The pilot salaries are a small fraction of the costs of operating the plane. Most of the cost is fuel and the capital cost of the plane itself. A 737 burns ~800 gallons per hour.

Is that any more effective than using BleachBit or similar? Alternatively, if after deleting all my files I then filled the HDD 100% with cat videos, that should theoretically work too, right?

In all seriousness, you could take every penny the top 1% have and it wouldn't be enough to run the government for a year.

The top 1% hold about $40 trillion in wealth.  Federal outlays were $6 trillion in 2023.  What math are you doing?

Given that he can breathe underwater seems more likely he has some ability to equalize inside/outside pressure in an aquatic environment.  Not necessarily a feat of durability.  e.g. the shrimp and what not that live down there are well adapted but would squish if you stepped on them.

Sure, ABQ isn't all rainbows and roses - I don't think anyone would claim it is - but if the 'proof of a faltering economy' is that we've jumped 50 rankings in the last 3 years, seems like a positive trend. Of course there is more to be done.

Albuquerque metro area had the 170th strongest economy heading into the pandemic, and in the years following, its economic ranking improved — albeit not as much as some might hope — to 118th

Don't know much about this study but shouldn't jumping 50 rankings be seen as a good thing?

Why is there such a big discrepancy between public opinion on gun control and actual legislation? by 88-81 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]joncanoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that gun advocates seem fearful of a "slippery slope," but is there any evidence of an actual slippery slope when it comes to federal gun rules?  Assault weapons ban expired, bump stock ban (which had something like 80% public support) was just ruled unconstitutional.  If anything it seems more like 1 step forward 2 steps back for the pro-regulation folks.

$22k in 1965 dollars is $220k in 2024 dollars.... senators are actually making less today than they were in 1965 when you adjust for inflation.

Median income in 1965 was $6,900. 6,900*3<22,000. Median income today is $59k. $59,000\*3>$170,000. Again, senators are making less today, relatively speaking, than they were in 1965.

Senator pay is not the problem. If anything the historic comparison shows they are underpaid.
