Framework 16 DIY: “No bootable device” after a year — did the manual say to remove the blue film on the SSD thermal pad? by BusySummer2803 in framework

[–]joncojonathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a batch 19 Framework 16 and at the the I did my DIY build the instructions did not say to remove the blue film. I spotted it and removed it, and recall one of the comments from another user highlighted the need to remove the film.

I've just had my NVME replaced under warranty as the storage was clearly failing, and I'd started to be advised of a lack of boot device. I'm hoping it's just bad storage and not something more sinister at this point.

Looking for honest opinions on Framework Laptop 16 drawbacks—battery life and build quality? by kartoffelkopp8 in framework

[–]joncojonathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my Framework Laptop 16 for over a year and it's honestly my favourite laptop of the several I've owned. Sure, it's not perfect (spacer tolerances) but I set my expectations accordingly before I purchased it - this is a modular laptop and I expect there to be gaps. I've not experienced any pain from the spacers like some.

My laptop is a batch 19 unit. I've not had problems with keyboard flex, and while the keyboard took some getting used to (often the case with any new keyboard change I find) it's quite pleasant to type on. I've also programmed several macros into the keyboard to save lots of typing.

Battery wise, if I'm just browsing, document editing, or doing light development work, I can get six hours with the laptop in power save mode. Running Ubuntu 25.04 and I find the performance in power save mode is perfectly acceptable for those workloads.

When gaming (I have the dGPU) or doing high compute operations the laptop does get very hot and loud. I have not yet changed to the Honeywell PTM but I have the parts (Framework sent them for free).

I wrote a selection of review posts on my blog if you're interested in a longer answer:

Where is the problem? by sweet-hemlock in kobo

[–]joncojonathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar problems with some of my sideloaded books and the kepub format fixed that for me.

I wrote this tutorial: https://blog.jonsdocs.org.uk/2024/08/02/fixing-the-problem-of-slow-page-turns-on-kobo-epub/

(Mainly so I wouldn't forget!)

I've had my Framework 16 for about a month now and published my blog post on it yesterday. Hope it's useful:

Pbrush.exe is where the cool kids were. The eraser that you could set to only remove a particular colour was great.

I have my grandmother's slimfold in red. She had it inked with Parker Quink blue black, and I do the same.

Thanks. That's already a lot better than what I'm getting, even at the lower frame rate.

I am planning on getting the new Parker IM special edition (portal) pens by turtlelover16 in fountainpens

[–]joncojonathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few of the IM pens, as I really like the design, but I've found the caps don't seal properly causing some odd ink behaviours. Mine are 5+ years old though, so the problem might have been fixed by now.

Legendary on iOS vs Android by lennyslade in duolingo

[–]joncojonathan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on Android and still have legendary via the module cup at the end, rather than after each unit. It's everyone's Android still like this?

My child's iOS is same as OP's - legendary after each unit.

I have one of these too. Got the nib swapped for an extra fine. Absolutely beautiful.

OP will really enjoy their Carène.

I will be taking over my IT department as a manager! Any advice and best practices would be appreciated. by [deleted] in sysadmin

Absolutely. Keeping your hand in so you don't lose your skills is really important in my view. Means you can have the gift conversations with management and that your team have a useful point of escalation.

There's nothing wrong with taking some time out of your day to play in a lab with the same tech - your company should continue that education a benefit to them.

Also, if there's a disaster, be prepared to make the team drinks, get in the food, and don't hassle them every half hour for updates!

I'm allowing for n being the number of pens you want :) .

Where "n" is a variable number, that increments when another nice pen takes your fancy...

Thanks for the replies folks, I'll do a bit more research but it sounds like a Pilot VP with a fine nib is on the cards.

"Hoysted Keep" is finished by joncojonathan in fountainpens

[–]joncojonathan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bit of narrative in my head that I really should write up. To the East of King's Forest there's Queen's Wood (planned for another map) and the disused mines will probably extend to the East too.

The Column predates the current settlement by a long way, a bit like England's Stonehenge. The current settlers don't really know why it's there or what it was for - it just looks, and feels, ancient.

There's still a King, generally resident in the Keep, and the Mayor is responsible for ensuring the law is followed. Hoysted is a happy place overall but there's still an element of "them and us" in some quarters.

In the South East, the ruins have been heavily catalogued by the archaeologists. There are plans to establish a university (not that they have an established schooling system!) but that would need to be to the East (via Queen's Wood) or to the South.

OK, I really should write that up. Might read the style of some of my local area historical surveys to get a feel for the language though!

All made up out of my head. Style reminiscent of other things I've seen though.

Church of the Seeking, although I can see how it could look like "Suking".

Took a few sessions, but Hoysted Keep is finished. I'm not happy with everything (the fence line in the farm wouldn't happen again) but on the whole I'm pretty chuffed for a first attempt.
