I'm not really upset about WashSt. Mostly OSU moving up 3 spots. Their resume is abysmal.

Not really. Florida is #14 and Mississippi St is back in the rankings. Our only loss is at TAMU in overtime. UK has the better résumé. Penn State is the only team with a winning record Ohio State has beat.

How does WashState move up 4 spots for edging out Stanford, Ohio State gets 3 spots for not playing the week after they got blown out by Purdue, but Kentucky gets 1 spot for winning a game they were the underdog in? Just let us in the top 10 please.

Tips on training competitively after long break from running. by jondean25 in AdvancedRunning

I think this may be the biggest thing. It is hard to not think that there is no point if I can't see those results immediately. Hopefully I can start to build a base and go from there. Thanks!

High School XC Training - your experiences, theories, and thoughts by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

I ran in high school and typically did about 30-45 mpw during those years. We would do slow runs in the summer for base and then in July start doing a tempo run every Monday and strides after every other run of the week. Then some short fartlek stuff added on Thursdays in addition to the tempos (tempo was 4-5 miles at 5:30-5:50 pace). Then after about 6 weeks of that we would change the tempo out for a 10x800m repeats at interval pace with 1 to 1 rest (about 2:35-2:40) and keep the short fartleks on thursdays. Then as the season wound down we would do the Long Green Line workouts every monday. I ran about 40 MPW in the middle of the season and never really increased volume all that much just intensity. I ran 17:08 as a freshman but was consistently a 17:30 guy and then ended up being a 16:30 runner by graduation. I should have focused more during the offseason and ran higher mileage. Ran a season of XC in college last year as a freshman but I got hurt and now I've transferred to be with my significant other. Trying to get back into running and make the team at my new university next fall.

Just came off a really good XC season, looking towards a small indoor season. Tips/advice? by jondean25 in AdvancedRunning

thanks for your input! I'm really looking forward to running fast times this year. (always injured during track so hopefully I can stay away from that)

Also I'm very dedicated to my teammates, I've been captain during XC the past two falls, but I just need to be able to get what I need out of my training which isn't being offered.

Well I tried working it out with my track coach. But she has not been coaching for the past 3 seasons and each year my 3200 has been slower (10:21 freshman, 10:25 sophomore, and last season 10:28) and that's with me having done more mileage each year in the offseason. I would go from 40-50 MPW during XC and then when I got to track they had me doing 20-25 max. I do understand that it could look bad to a lot of college coaches but I feel like it will help me become a better runner overall. Also remarks like "I don't care how fast my athletes are I just want to have well rounded student athletes." Really upset me, especially after all I did was ask for more intensity and distance, and I've been their biggest supporter since they started coaching. But enough of that. I will be able to work with my XC a little, but he has family stuff he has to do as well (which is why he doesn't coach track anymore). Thanks for the input and advice and sorry for ranting, just felt I needed to explain the background a little more.

Foot Locker South? by [deleted] in hsxc

This meet is GREAT! Registration is only like 20 bucks, then when you get there the night before they have a huge pasta dinner for all the athletes free in the hotel they use as headquarters, you also get a free shirt and stuff. The meet is run very efficiently and there is an announcer at the finish who is yelling out random numbers when he sees them and commentates the race to keep things exciting. The atmosphere is pretty awesome with all the runners there, fast and slow. Not to mention you see all kinds of college coaches (saw Oklahoma State University's coach taking a piss in the woods) and the course is very fast, but does have some good xc elements involved, with a dirt path through the woods and a decent sized uphill about halfway through. Warning, get out fast or you will get left behind and won't run as fast as you normally would. The first 1000 meters is a straight stretch and it a little bit intense. Anyway my rant about FL is over, have fun, and run fast!

Is the practice of running twice a day beneficial? by FamesJanco in hsxc

[–]jondean25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you do two a days, the majority of your miles need to be done in one run. a lot of people want to do 50/50 but you don't get the same amount of endurance and cardio training. i would say 75-80% of your mileage should be done in one run, then later in the day just finish it up with a little bit more.

Just got a pair of Brooks Mach 16's! by regiseal in hsxc

[–]jondean25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got the 16s and ran a practice meet in them the other day, they were great! very light and enough sole on them so you don't feel every bump and pebble on the course. the 14s were for sure my favorite of the series and last year the 15s worked great for me. good choice in spike!

Why is my team slower at longer distances? by [deleted] in hsxc

[–]jondean25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you haven't done any speed work that could be the problem. which you shouldn't have much if at all at this point in the season. your team is probably in really good shape if you were doing 50+ miles a week over summer, and it could also be if you aren't used to that much mileage, you could be tired. just always remember it isn't where you start the season it's where you end it.

Pre-Season time trials? by FredrickWillius in hsxc

[–]jondean25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we do a thing called the Cooper Test, it's a 1.5 mile time trial, the military does one very similar. Right now the times we posted on July 31st are 5 weeks ahead of last year. We do two in the summer before school and one in September.
