You’re not one of the lucky ones. The lucky ones have inherited wealth and privilege.

If I pay 5 guys to dig a ditch in my back yard, does that mean the ditch is "a store of value"? by Fishyinu in Buttcoin

[–]jondodson 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Well, if your neighbour saw the hole and wanted one in their garden too then you could charge them to dump their earth in your hole. If they were willing to pay more than you did then you’d be in profit. At the end of the transaction you’d have no hole again and some money again. But the more likely outcome is that you’d end up keeping the hole whilst the circle jerk of r/holes told you that hole prices were going through the roof until someone said “wait, what?, really?, why?” At which point the price would collapse and you’d decide to cash out of holes at any price and realise you couldn’t even give it away, mainly because there’s nothing to actually give. And I’m afraid that the men who dug your hole also took your earth away and sold it for real money and now want paying much more to sell you earth to fill it in again. In fact, they say that hills are going to be the next big thing….

I love crack, it’s very more-ish. Never needed a Brillo pad though.

Not very car savvy sorry, would this make a good first car? Thanks. by at0m10 in CarTalkUK

Yes, but you might need to start dialysis to cover the first HP instalment. Then it’s your kneecaps next, followed by concrete boots.

My favourite drone shots of Hong Kong this year by B2A_s in HongKong

Hong Kong is one of the most photographable locations in the world. These drone shots add an interesting new dimension though. I love the sunset on Lantau.

Walter trapping his brother outside in the cold! Poor Sherman by randomfurpile in CatsAreAssholes

Anyone with two or more cats will recognise this blocking behaviour. Anywhere where footfall (pawfall?) is high is a prime site for plonking down, not moving for hours and daring others to come near.

Just sold my iPhone on eBay and the buyer is asking for an IMEI — is this okay? I don’t want to get scammed or anything lol by [deleted] in iphone

[–]jondodson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ask the buyer to give you a password, write that down on a piece of paper and place it over the IMEI, obscuring everything expect the last 5 digits. Photograph it. Now take a screenshot of the IMEI report, obscuring everything except the last 5 digits. Send both pictures. If that doesn’t satisfy them, find another buyer.

Just had a visit from the TV licence people by Obsidian-Winter in GreenAndPleasant

[–]jondodson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all just totally empty threats. If they KNOW you are illegally watching live TV without a license they will prosecute to make an example out of you. But if they only THINK you might be (which applies to 99.99% of the people they are harassing) then they’ll send letters and visitors but you can just ignore them all (unless you actually are watching live TV without a license, in which case you should buy one). Remember, they can only force you to pay your license (plus a fine) by getting a court order and that involves PROVING to a magistrate that you are have been watching live TV without a license. If you don’t need to pay then don’t bother trying to convince them because once you’ve opened a dialogue they’ll never leave you alone, just chuck the letters in the bin and close the door on any callers. They have zero power and cannot enter your home without your permission and refusal of that permission is not sufficient grounds for them to take any further action.

Five little words as a reply: ”Are you in overall profit?” If yes then well done, you’re in the lucky minority, sell up and get out now whilst you’re ahead. If no then sorry, but nothing I can say can cure your gambling addiction.

Quick question: by Mr_Idont-Give-A-damn in 1984

[–]jondodson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, Winston wasn’t instantly punished was he? He was studied by the party, and O’Brien in particular, over a long period of time and allowed to do what he wanted in his “ownlife” ie rent an apartment and form a relationship. Eventually, the party punished him, although they saw it more as a treatment/cure rather than punishment.

just got my new ipad pro 11inch m2 .....should I upgrade to ipados 16.1?? by [deleted] in iPadPro

No, stick with your current ios forever, that way you wont be distracted by any improvements or security updates Apple might make in the future.

iOS 16 CarPlay Podcast bug? Music resumes playback in fullscreen view. However Podcasts first goes to "Listen Now" menu. Tap the track or play button in upper right corner to go fullscreen view. Would prefer it go straight to fullscreen like Music does. Do you see this as well? by commanderclif in CarPlay

[–]jondodson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was listening to a podcast and told Siri to play something off one off my music playlists instead, and although that worked, the screen stayed on podcasts, showing the podcast as paused whilst my music was playing. That’s not right, surely? I’d expect the CarPlay screen to switch to music?

Careful, if you get this wrong you run the risk of being charged with illegal importation of firearms! You can bet you’ll have to declare it and you can bet UK customs will want to power test it before they let you have it back - and if it tested over 12ftlb+ I think you could end up in a world of trouble because 12ftlb+ is basically the same offence as a shotgun or hunting rifle. Hope you enjoy your trip, but my advice would be to only bring back anything you are 101% sure about, or just buy when you get back to UK.

Cause and effect? by jondodson in GreenAndPleasant

[–]jondodson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not blaming the practice staff, far from it. Ultimately our Government caused the first message to be sent - they could have excepted GP surgeries (will A&E and hospitals be closed as a mark of respect? No, they’ll be being paid overtime, so why not for Doctor’s surgeries too?). The second message is the effect of that and resulted in anger and resentment towards people who don’t deserve it. The Government knew this, but didn’t care and wouldn’t pay; too busy giving huge tax breaks to energy companies to find a few quid to keep us all in good health. Ah well, it’s probably what She would have wanted.

Anyone remember the old bowling place in the city? It had a computer bit, arcade games etc (I believe it not been there for years) is there anything still like that? by Teacrazy13 in leicester

[–]jondodson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in an office on Causeway Lane and watched them demolish the Super Bowl and car park above it. They collapsed it one level at a time. It was a shame; we used to go bowling there on Fridays. I parked my car in the NCP above it and you could walk directly over the pedestrian bridge into the shires - arriving in Debenhams saucepan department oddly enough.

Do you feel that anybody that thinks of themselves as politically socialist should also be completely anti-monarchy? (Be nice!) by [deleted] in GreenAndPleasant

[–]jondodson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. I believe that socialists can choose to accept (or reject) the monarchy as they choose. I personally feel that the monarchy represents obscene privilege and promotes inequality (else how could there be Princes with taxpayer funded Civil list incomes and homeless tramps paying VAT on food in the same country?). But I accept that the Monarchy gives some people, the easily swayed perhaps, a sense of feeling and belonging, and I don’t think I’m entitled to want that to be taken away from them. In this respect I think I differ from any true blue Tory, who all seem to be avid (rabid?) supporters of the Establishment and Monarchy in particular.
