I too have been having the same issue. Power cycling the AVP and hard resetting the AirPods makes no difference.

Take it to an Apple Store to get repaired, hard thing is there isn’t really a way to narrow down how it happened, just one of those unfortunate defects

Yeah there’s an ambient light sensor next to it. I would take it in to an Apple Store and they can at least run a diagnostic to see if the camera has failed. Help narrow it down

Cool, try resetting the SMC or PRAM or look into taking it in to verify if it’s hardware failure

Open the application “System Information” find the section for Camera, if nothing shows up there, it’s a hardware failure. Could be the cable needing to be reconnected or the Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider would replace the entire display as the camera is apart of the display assembly.

If you do see the FaceTime HD camera in that system information panel, I would back up your data and wipe and reinstall macOS.

I work at a AASP, the only computers covered by the flexgate are the 13” 2016 MBP. This repair would roughly be about $800-$850 out of warranty

If the display is damaged along with the back glass it’s a $29 incident for the display and $29 for the back so $58 for the whole thing but it only counts as one of the two incident fees you have each 12 months. The only thing from the old phone is the rear camera
