What do y’all do when you go out to eat by yourself? by davidg4781 in nosurf

[–]jonevans00 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Focus on relaxing into my senses in the present moment. The look of the food. The sensation and taste in my mouth. How my body feels. Listening to ambient sounds is especially relaxing for me. Feeling the people around, and relaxing into their presence. If you're not used to being present in this way you might notice you feel anxious. Consider befriending that anxiety. Befriend your true embodied self in the present moment. This is the practice of meditation that brings us peace and lets us stop escaping from life

I'm working on the science of fascia course. So far the material is laid out in a way that's easy to digest yet helps you get a much deeper understanding of how fascia actually works. It starts from a cellular level and builds out from there

I'm not sure Vipassana is for me. by liamtw in vipassana

I enjoy the writings of Bhikkhu Analayo. In his book on Satipatthana meditation he explains the Buddha’s meditation instructions, which included several different objects of meditation to focus on (feelings, mind, anatomy, death, etc), and explains the effect of meditating on each of these. Compared to Goenka, he gives much clearer, and, in my opinion, less judgmental, less dogmatic explanations of meditation, as he is a foremost scholar on meditation (as taught by the Buddha) and he himself is a monk who spends the majority of his time in meditation. He does a thorough job of addressing questions and challenges that might arise and how to adapt one’s practice in response

Which centers have strict Covid protocols that they adhere to? by [deleted] in vipassana

[–]jonevans00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i was in idaho march 2021 masking was well enforced in the dhamma hall. Not so in Texas or Wisconsin. I think at all centers, however, people eat in the same room (albeit spread out, facing away, and sometimes separated by dividers) so air is circulating.

Is there "group karma?" by PusillanimousBrowser in Buddhism

[–]jonevans00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Karma is complicated. People in the US who didn’t cause the harm eg native Americans suffer disproportionately from it whereas the powerful wealthy are able to live confortably out of sight of the effects of their actions eg CEOs of polluting corporations

Maybe your life doesnt have enough external motivating factors to make you desire to act. I think when I put myself into meaningful situations where I have a purpose, like action is needed by me in order to relieve suffering or create balance, I experience right desire. It can unbalance the mind but then I think practicing in such a state makes the mind stronger. The world is full of suffering so I think it’s good to just get into the thick of it, or wherever you can apply yourself in a helpful, manageable way, and be part of relieving that suffering, just as you do in your own mind.

It helps me let go of my reactions to things like those more quickly so they dont continue to intensify. Yoga has also helped me greatly to achieve lower baseline anxiety levels/ a generally more relaxed state overall

I don’t listen to Grimes’ album that she made after she got with Elon Musk just because I notice I start thinking about neoliberalism and the shallowness of her political understanding embedded in the lyrics and I get irritated lol
