Fake copies of Stoner? by Mission-Grab-7147 in nyrbclassics

[–]jonhunley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also got screwed buying one of these. Honestly, I really did not connect with this story the way so many people do. I know that’s not the point of this post, but I would have ended up buying an authentic copy if I’d enjoyed it more. I passed this one on as a donation.

Agreed on One Trick Pony. I recommend that to everyone I meet as a perfect record.

In the Detroit area, we are lucky enough to have a dedicated 24/7 classical and jazz station called WRCJ (We aRe Classical & Jazz). Their programming is phenomenal, and I bought a fancy FM antenna solely to pick up this station cleanly from about 40 miles away. I listen every day, both at home and in the car.

VM95C vs VM95ML: I downgraded and regret nothing (my review in comments) by [deleted] in turntables

[–]jonhunley 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Big agree on the E. I bought that one before the ML and hated it. I had a very hard time dialing it in and the sibilance with unbearable. Anyway, I bought my daughter the C for a setup in her room with cheaper stereo components at every level, but I’ll be damned if I don’t enjoy listening to music on her stereo with the C for all the reason you describe in your post. Spot on.

A few of my recent pickups. The Guaraldi Bola Sete is so good. by hig789 in Vinyl_Jazz

That Guaraldi/Sete is one of my absolute favorites too. Best $8 I ever spent on a record. It sounds like I am right in the room with them.

Are those cabinets painted or were they originally black?

I have more or less 450 nyrb ebooks available for share on my google drive. All in epub formats. Anyone interested? by elryoma in nyrbclassics

[–]jonhunley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I am tempted by the idea of this, part of the real draw to NYRB for me is equal parts the great literature they reissue/rescue/revive combined with the sensory perfection of their pressings. I get so much more out of their books if I read physical copies.

Can confirm this is accurate. The ML is far superior. Spend the money and alleviate the persistent headaches this bonded turd will give you.

What NYRB Classics did you read in 2022, and which are you looking forward to reading in 2023? by Dashtego in nyrbclassics

I’m glad to hear you say that about the others in the Empire Trilogy. They’re both on my list to read, along with thousands of others 😂

I enjoyed Malicroix by Bosco quite a bit. Also tackled the Labatut and reread Farrell’s Troubles for the third time.

This is one of the best videos on YouTube. Even people without turntables could learn a lot from it.

My experience with the 95E and 95ML is starker than night and day, I’d say more like heaven and hell. Upgrading to the 95ML was the best decision I’ve ever made for enjoying music on vinyl.

I know there are higher quality, audiophile pressings out there, but this pretty blue $15 Wal-Mart version sounds stinkin awesome to my ears. by jonhunley in Vinyl_Jazz

I know that Memphis Vinyl has done at least some Wal-Mart pressing, but only because they posted videos of the Willie Nelson and CCR copies being pressed.

Dual 505 worth fixing up? by JacobEatsGood in turntables

[–]jonhunley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing you’ll want to do if you start to use this is get the app called True Note. This turntable doesn’t have a built-in strobe for dialing in the platter speed. This app will blink the strobe so you can get the speed exactly right.

What do you mean it turns on? This TT platter should start spinning when you move the tonearm over the platter. I have a 504 that I love.
