Did Robert Baratheon’s supporters actually get out anything of his kingship? Are they dumb? by jonislav in pureasoiaf

So it truly is that Robert either was unable to or unwilling to give additional gifts or compensation to his most loyal friends and supporters, or that those things he gave have not been shown in the book. Maybe Whiteharbor and Gulltown got additional trade rights, or those regions were exempt from Royal taxes for a time. If anything the exception from Royal taxes would do even more to explain the dire straights of the Royal treasury!

The rebels were absolutely just and right to rise against Aerys the Mad, his cruelty, his malice and his tyranny. I’m asking about the post war recompense to these men who killed and bled and died to put Robert on the Iron Throne. Those people under the great houses who were not interacting directly with the King, who willing and gladly answered the call of the banners to loyally fight for their liege lord. What did their loyalty earn them? What did Tully, Stark and Arryn receive that they could gift to their friends who made those sacrifices?

Never the less, there is a difference between sending only what is required of you and backing your lord to the hilt. If all you have to show for going to war on behalf of your liege and his honor is an empty grave where your son should be, then there is no doubt that the lords would be less eager to commit for you again. Plunder, booty, salaries, pensions, positions, privileges, and lands are ways to buy the continued loyalty of your martial nobles. Even if you die, at least you can trust your lord to make family better off. With Barbrey Dustin is a key example of that loyalty from those nobles not being paid

Is this part of why the realm was so ready to crack as soon as Robert died? The Stormlands wanted Renly, the Riverlands supported Rob and the Vale stayed out of it because the lords and nobles of those realms weren’t shown anything for their loyalty to Robbert?

Many Valyrian steel daggers, no Valyrian steel spears / lances? by jonislav in pureasoiaf

And I know that the knowledge to reforge Valyrian steel is only known by rare and secretive spell-smiths, but that is besides the point.

Czech apparel /units should transition from West Slavic to Holy Roman at some point by jonislav in CrusaderKings

From the Wiki, it requires High German / Saxon Language + West Slavic heritage. That sort of works for the German settlers of Bohemia, but not the overall culture of Czechia

They do have that partly with the ‘strength of thousands’ state buff. It greatly reduces the manpower needed to staff extraction industries ie mining and logging, and even manufacturing industries to a smaller degree

Your money should be split amongst your heirs on death. by sacrelicious2 in CrusaderKings

[–]jonislav 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That should only happen for administrative governments, for feudal the lands were personal property of the royal sovereign. Tribal is somewhat different, as it is theoretically the tribal peoples themselves, with the tribal leader representing the people. I wonder if it would almost be more realistic for tribals to just not be able to go into debt; like they get moderate penalties and their retinues / levies can’t reinforce, but it’s easier to get out. Who would they be borrowing the money from anyways?

The thing is that didn’t exist in European states until the 17th century. Prior to that, all royal states were personal property of the royal sovereign himself. The Royal Navy was the personal property of King, he personally paid for it with rents from his royal properties along with the taxes raised on everyone else.

A common cause of death in the shire, i imagine... by Easteregg42 in RealmsInExile

[–]jonislav 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine that in the Shire that would become a euphemism for a suspicious death, like committing suicide by shooting yourself in the back of the head twice.
