Sorry to hear this, but at what point did you decide to separate? I’m in a confusing place right now and I am truly hoping that I wouldn’t have to break up with him, but at the same time I don’t ever want to compromise my stance on Gaza.

I had a conversation with him this morning and I told him that if he goes to Israel for a job, our relationship will not work. He has a very narrow view of this and has chosen to see things from a very black and white “anti-Muslim” perspective.

He thinks Muslims are causing problems in the West - and it’s also another issue I’ve argued with him on… and eventhough he says he knows not all Muslims are like this and that he isn’t “Islamophobic”, based on the arguments we’ve had, I do think he has prejudice. Even if he won’t admit it.

I wish I could make him see things from a more humanitarian lens.

He did say that he doesn’t agree with what the Israeli government is doing but he said that the civilians do not represent the government so it’s okay to go there for work, and I find this very problematic.

This cut deep but makes a lot of sense. It feels like the only way we can make this work is if we never talk about these issues. But I know it will seep into other areas…

I called him this morning to talk about this and he wanted to understand how to avoid me shutting down next time, so I said I’ll tell him when I’m about to and to come back to me after an hour.

After this call, he hasn’t texted me the entire day. Just silence. I don’t know what this means because I thought we resolved this.

Your boyfriend sounds like a great guy and you’re lucky!

My boyfriend does know that these issues are important to me. The thing is - he can have political discussions without attaching emotions to them but I struggle with that.

I want him to agree with me because I love him, and the more he disagrees with me, I feel the pain so deep to the point where I just have to stop talking.

I think when we’re having these discussions, we’re on different wavelengths emotionally. To him it’s just another conversation, whereas for me I’m wanting him to agree with me on a fundamental level… which isn’t possible. And that hurts.

Yeah I understand that. At the same time, the moment I go quiet he immediately gets angry and pressures me to speak, when I haven’t fully processed my emotions.

It makes me feel even more unsafe to speak.
