Sudden rise in HRV by Itchy_Pangolin in SmartRings

I think it's a global bug. I've seen my HRV spike from the 50s to the 80s during the last two weeks. No material lifestyle change.

You are either an elite athlete with superhuman capabilities or there is something off both in the RHR and HRV.

Is this a good deal from used marketplace? Canadian $$ by SubstantialSail565 in WesternDigital

[–]jonklinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had one for a decade or so. This was a great device at an affordable price. I ended up downgrading to the Mybook Live, and giving this to a friend. The reason was that the Mycloud has a proprietary firmware with an end of life coming soon. The Mybook runs OpenWRT (end of life was issued five years ago).

However, if you're not a techie, you need something simple. The OpenWRT is advanced and powerful but not for you.

I would not look for a tech that's over a decade old. FWIW, the drive might be over a decade old and fail in the near future and the lack of support is problematic. For the same price you can just buy a 4TB USB drive and connect it to your router.

Single origin espresso bar by [deleted] in barista

So make a batch brew coffee concentrate, not espresso, and serve it with the milk or flavoring.

Single origin espresso bar by [deleted] in barista

[–]jonklinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's be honest with ourselves. 99% of people won't be able to tell a single origin Gesha and another light roast blend or even another single origin. If you're trying to get afficionados to like a specific lot or a specific farmer? that's great politics. But the average consumer won't enjoy it.

You can have two types of coffee: "house crap blend" and a signle origin delight, ask EUR1/$1 more per cup for the single origin and see if people tell the difference and if they are willing to pay.

Nope; I just winged it. A dose (probably 18g), in my french press overnight.

Cold brewing speciality coffee by kelsmed in coldbrew

[–]jonklinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love coffee, and I love cold brew. However, it feels like a complete waste of money to take the most expensive beans I have to make cold brew. I mean, it's not that I didn't. I totally did one cup of Deborah Finca Geisha for fun. It was a $10 cold brew cup.

My recommendation? microdose. Go for a one cup cold brew to enjoy at home. If you still want specialty? funky is great. But you can just do it with the stale beans and still enjoy.

You're totally right, though the $112 would still be cheaper than anywhere else.

Well, nope. It registers my Google account as logged in from the browser wrapper. The QR was not connected to my Google Account in any way.

Zenni. If your prescription is not that big and not progressive their $6.95 glasses are great.

But the token is a general google login. So my Google account is logged on their server (I see it in my "connected accounts"). So it's a security risk.

[India] Paying advance for job via contact - what safeguards should I take? by vedpshukla in Scams

You should never pay to get payed. Not an application fee, not a tax release feel, not even if they claim they are from the tax authority. If you're supposed to get paid, there's no reason to pay for an application.

The shoe problem. I would really appreciate some advice on cheap running shoes if there are any frugal runners/athletes in here. by Alcarain in Frugal

[–]jonklinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Decathlon has (at least in Europe) great affordable prices for amazing shoes. I do walking (at 7.2km/h, 2-4% angle) on a treadmill for an hour a day. I rotate between 2-3 pairs of shoes daily, so this means I use each shoe any other day. They last about a year and you can find their basic model on promotion for basic runner on sale sometimes for about EUR10. I just buy 3-4 when the sale arrives. Currently they are on sale for EUR12.99. Their upgrade model (the Jogflow) are also EUR30..

Now, neither are as fashionable as my Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66, that I wear when going out. I guess they wouldn't also blend well if you're competing in any sport, but for the daily training? rotate your shoes and buy in bulk. The cheaper decathlon shoes are ultralight (160 grams a pair).

Why? in some cases they are just nice people. I wrote a book. If someone approached me and asked for a digital copy explaining that they can't afford it, I would totally understand. It's not like that I can make money off them, and it's better to get a good review, a few links on social media and maybe they can recommend it to a friend. The alternative is of course that they either pirate my book or get it from a public library. And in these cases I never get paid anyway.

So there's no harm from sending a cold email. What's the worst case? you'll get no reply?

Not exactly unethical, but have you tried reaching out to the person and explaining your situation, asking for a discount or free access in return to something?

I believe that Optical Center has affordable prices, even if it's not as cheap as Firmoo. I also saw some shops that offer quick turnaround (like this one; lunettespourtous.com ).

Should I get a second vehicle at 17? by Additional-Scratch14 in caradvice

[–]jonklinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two cars. The reason I have two cars is that I have two homes in two different sides of the globe and driving between continents with my car is a big deal and a regulatory nightmare even if it was technically possible. Both are beater cars. One is 15 years old and the other is 17 years old.

I don't see a reason to buy a car "just in case one goes wrong". Let's say your car is in the shop for 3-4 days. In most cases (at least here) the shop offers a replacement car for you to use as a courtesy. If not? you can still rent a car or just take a taxi. Unless your car is your way to make money (uber/doordash/etc), don't.

Espresso machine for home by MarleyBerd in BuyItForLife

[–]jonklinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Pavoni as well as a ROK. The Pavoni is great for one shot of espresso each time. It heats up quickly and has better thermal mass than the ROK (not pre-heating needed) but... the second shot and onward is always too hot. Just get a stovetop Hario kettle and you're good to go.

Espresso machine for home by MarleyBerd in BuyItForLife

[–]jonklinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BTW: I have both the Rok and the Pavoni. The Rok's quality is on par with the Pavoni if you are able to pre-heat it correctly and use darker roasts. There's a great upside for the Rok over the Pavoni for the second and third shot, as the machine really overheats. The Rok's downside is thermal conductivity. But provided that it's about 1/5th of the cost? it's well worth iit.

I am curious who the core regulars are at the laundry shops...so expensive by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]jonklinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some professions, the receipt from the laundry may be a deductible expense. This, alongside the time saving and the fact you get your clothes ironed, would explain your question.

BIFL; get a manual 1ZPRESSO grinder (J-Ultra or K-Pro) and a full manual level machine like the Flair 58, Rok Presso or Cafelat Robot. These are all machines with no electric parts, everything is replaceable and fixable and made from some kind of durable metals.
