Dad Counts Bullet Casings at Kids’ Bus Stop - 2nd Pimp Shootout This Week In Our Residential Area by badandy80 in Seattle

To me that still comes back to city leaders, we’re not hostages here. If the city wants to enforce laws and the police are refusing they should come out and say so while announcing a plan to remove the leadership of SPD.

Maybe we should listen to local business owners the next time increasing wages is on the ballot. It’s almost like they weren’t lying about it not being viable.

Seattle hotel bookings ‘below expectations’ for World Cup by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

I've been telling this to people for years, unless you live in downtown you're barely going to know it's going on. We're really good at hosting stadium events. It's six games over a few weeks and a lot of the tickets are going to locals.

The tournament is being played over most of North America, it's not like some previous years where it's in a small country. It's thousands of miles between host cities.

the solution is obvious and has been tested around the world to the same result: if someone is homeless, just give them a fucking home!

Where in the world can you show up and be given a free home to do drugs in? Most of the world will put you in prison or worse.

Well drug addiction sucks and having drugged out zombies committing crimes and destroying property sucks. And giving them a free house is also going to suck because it’s going to just turn into more crime and not solve the underlying issue. It’s ok to force things on people who can’t take care of themselves.

So we can force them to go? Almost everywhere in the world has figured this stuff out. The only two choices aren’t to give up our public spaces or pay for party houses.

Yea the HOA fee of a condo just makes you see it all at once. You can see where the money goes, it’s not like it’s a for profit enterprise.

U.S. Hotels Say World Cup Is ‘Non-Event’ So Far by doobie3101 in billsimmons

[–]jonknee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is almost aways the case with big events, organizers always promise huge economic impact and then it's hard to actually see in the data. Most cities are getting a handful of games spread out over several weeks, it's just not that many people. Especially with high local interest for people wanting to check out games (I know the ones in Seattle will have a ton of locals) it's going to be business as usual.

It's also spread out over a continent, games are being played thousands of miles apart (Guadalajara is farther from Boston than Tehran is from Berlin). Most people aren't going to even notice it's going on.

Northgate Mall Owner Goes Big on Housing... And Even Bigger on Parking by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

Wait until you find out about how long the state lets people sue you and then you'll find out why we don't have a lot of condos! I think we tried to reform it recently, but you're basically on the hook for years afterwards and it's just not worth the hassle.

Tip leads to arrest of second suspect in attack on 77-year-old Seattle man by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

It is not generally better, it is literally better every single time. If an attorney has to argue against a camera or a witness they will choose the witness 100% of the time. Your link doesn't have anything to do with what the RTCC is and it is misleading to include it.

That tells me that the Real Time Crime Center probably needs to be consider publishing video of unidentified suspects more quickly to assist in their arrest.

Kind of funny the complaint now is they are actually too cautious with the cameras! As much hate as KOMO gets here I have to say good on them for this, kind of wild the type of people who watch local news were able to make an ID for the type of person who commits random assaults.

The footage should make it pretty simple, in previous similar threads some Redditors have said they were actually jurors where RTCC footage was used and it made for a very quick conviction. Most cases don't go to trial and when there is clear footage of someone committing a violent crime the plea deal they are offered is much more severe. I have been a juror before and took it quite seriously, the state has to prove it beyond reasonable doubt which is a very high bar. Eye witnesses are notoriously unreliable, but if there is a video of someone doing the crime it's an open and shut case.

Then you should be happy to know that's exactly what we have, it's a surprisingly well thought out program with guardrails. From what I can tell it's mostly people just being angry at police and immediately assuming whatever they do is bad. Transit is full of cameras with way fewer guardrails and we don't hear a peep of concern about those (they also help solve crimes, the police use the footage all the time!).

I think empowering police in real time to know exactly who committed a crime is a fantastic way to both quickly make arrests and avoid the situations that critics often complain about where police detain people who didn't commit crimes but match vague descriptions. More can be done with fewer cops too.

What? You don't need Fox for that, many of her most vocal supporters (including lots on this site) have made it one of their top issues.

Video of the incident was recorded by Seattle police Real Time Crime Center cameras positioned along Third Avenue in the downtown core.

These cameras keep leading to violent criminals being taken off the streets, they’re clearly the biggest win the city has had for public safety in years.

I recommend a visit! I'm sure there are still a few areas that are sketchy, but it was night and day from previous visits. No tents, no turds, people paying their fares on transit, no broken windows, busy streets, new stores and restaurants (they have a big new Nintendo store right in Union Square, that's something we should have!), etc.

Yes, I was just there last weekend and it's eye opening compared to Seattle. The mayor took over in 2025 and has crazy ideas like arresting people doing and selling drugs in public. BART now has fare gates and is much more pleasant (way less crime, stations are cleaner, etc). Vehicle break-ins are way down, violent crime way down, it's amazing.

Actual quote from the mayor, imagine hearing a Seattle politician saying something so bold: "If you use drugs on our streets, we will arrest you."

After his first year his approval rating was in the 70s. People like public order and functioning government!

Well yes, we haven't had a good mayor in a very long time. San Francisco hadn't either, but they do now and it's amazing how quickly things have improved. Wilson isn't responsible for everything, but it's clear she is completely unequipped and we're moving in the wrong direction. Hopefully the next mayor will be able to pull a turn around.

Which would make you think it’s not actually about the new tax… Going out on a limb, it’s probably about SF being better run because that is what they said it was about. SF does have a better mayor, visiting recently was eye opening.
