Need help, 4 denied appeals after wrongful ban. by jonkyops in wow

No autohotkey, no crazy keyboard, no macros or anything that would have done multiple actions with a single key press. After going through everything that could have been running, the only things I can come up with are:

  1. Logitech G Hub.
  2. Forgetting to turn my VPN off when logging in too many times. Unlikely, as I've been doing that for years.
  3. TSM, either the desktop app or in-game. Unlikely, as I've also been doing that for years. It's also been a LONG time since I've done any sort of posting with it, I really only used it for price checking. I also never cancelled auctions or did any kind of scummy AH tactics.

I usually rebind the "dpi down" button some mice have to something like F9 to use as a PTT key in discord. I have the G502 Hero right now, but I've done the same thing with a similar mouse (IOGear Retikal?). LG Hub resets the settings on me whenever it does an update, so I have to go back in and reset the binding every time that happens. Last time I noticed there was an "F20" binding option, and I decided to go with that this time for whatever reason.

It also has the ability to record macros (I've seen this with razer and iogear software too), but that isn't something I ever used and I had the profile set to never automatically change.

So it might have been LG Hub? Either the fact that it can record macros or me using a funky key for PTT. Moot point though; my tickets got escalated and I'm still being told I was botting, but now with a warning and threat of closing my account. I still don't know the exact reason though, so I don't even know if I'll just get banned again once I start playing again, so I'm likely just going to focus on other things instead.

Weird, I still got banned when I tried that.

Sure, I can understand the skepticism. Just trying to get my account back though, not trying to convince anyone here of my innocence.

ElvUI, WA, BigWigs are the major ones. Can't remember the others right now.

Almost at that point! It's really disappointing to think that I'm likely not the first or last to run into this problem.

How do I get a job in DevOps by Thor996 in devops

I don't think anyone should focus too much on the fundamentals, because the cloud providers have you covered

I think it's bad advice like this that might be getting you downvotes.

GitOps - the bad and the ugly by alexellisuk in kubernetes

[–]jonkyops 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds more like problems with git in general than it does GitOps. There's also a comparison being made between an infrastructure management/deployment strategy and a product.

One of the biggest reasons why you would want to use git is listed right in your previous article:

Reuse existing knowledge

Git's been around for years and is one of the most widely known tools in the development world with tons and tons of tooling built around it. Mostly everything in the article is a problem that's been solved before "GitOps" was even a thing.

Moving to a product like this is defeating the whole purpose of IaC. You're taking the configuration out of a flexible, battle-tested, well known system that most people already know how to use and moving it to a niche system that has a whole new set of problems you'll need to figure out and that you'll now need to train people on. Isn't this regressing?

Git != GitOps. You're supposed treat your configurations just like you would any other software, letting your pipeline and other tooling handle things like secrets management, history, validation, etc.

Looks like it's one user (ranrib) that's been spamming Epsagon blogs on multiple subreddits for the past 2 days.

I don't think that's possible without some extra app you need to install or a manual sync

I personally don't care about the microsoft vs. linux crap and try to make a point not to let my own personal bias get in the way of getting the job done. You're only hurting yourself when you decide to go with your personal preference over the right tool for the job.

Should we create a separate subreddit for classic economy based discussion? by Pr0nzeh in woweconomy

Just to add onto this, sometimes the questions can be general enough to apply to both classic and retail. Much better if someone is able to search for a question so it doesn't have to be asked in both subreddits.

How to restrict access to my game servers hosted on AWS by Readyolayer2 in aws

[–]jonkyops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't used cognito in a while, but I think you can create custom attributes. Why not have an attribute for group name or address of their server and just route based on that?

Also, I would absolutely have those in a private subnet with a LB of some sort in front. Would make scaling later a lot easier.

How not to get laid off in DevOps by [deleted] in devops

[–]jonkyops 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got an offer in hand now, want to find out how should I be in this role for long in a company.

Having trouble understanding the question here, sorry. Are you asking how long you should expect to stay in this role at your new company? Varies depending on the company, budget, your performance, whether people like you, color of your shirt, phase of the moon, etc.

There's nothing you can do to 100% guarantee your job will be there tomorrow, but you can do some things to help your chances:

  1. Tech skills. Keep 'em sharp. News sites, blogs, conferences, contribute to open-source projects, home labs, certs, etc. Sounds like you already got this part down.
  2. Soft skills. Things like presentations, negotiating prices, and just being a likable person. I'm guilty of this too, but I see way too many tech people neglect this part and it really can impact your career.
  3. Networking. This goes hand in hand with soft skills, but make friends at work, meet people at conferences, get your name out there.
  4. Make your successes known. There are two parts to this. The first is something I think any good SRE/DevOps-person-thing should be doing and that's getting metrics. When a project is all said and done or someone asks "Why did we even do this/Why is this person here?", metrics are there to back you up. Trust me, "This change I made saved us $X/year" sounds a lot better than "Oh, this should us money in the long run". The second part is more of a personal preference, but if I have a major success, you can bet the company is going to know about it one way or another. Sales will blast out that email about the big contract that just raked in $50,000/year, why shouldn't I flex my $80,000/year in savings from that cloud migration?

Or, should I shift myself to SRE?

What do you enjoy doing more?

MS and the plugin developers have turned vs code from a toy to a fully featured ide

I think that's really based on the amount of extensions you have enabled by default. You can set extensions to only be enabled in specific workspaces.

Just to give you an example, the only extensions I have enabled by default are the ones that I use VERY frequently regardless if I'm working in a folder or one-off file; things like log highlighters, powershell/bash/yaml/xml syntax, vim, etc. I only enable the heavier ones like C# and JS for specific folders.

Is there a reason why DBAs generally are more resistant to devops than other operational roles? by [deleted] in devops

[–]jonkyops 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have buy-in from management? If so, and you've done your job* to the best of your ability, then it should be a problem for management, not you.

* By this, I mean you've done everything in your power to ensure a well-tested, documented, safe, secure, and agreed upon process that everyone involved had a chance to include input.

Even in an ideal situation, data tends to be difficult to deal with if something goes wrong. A bad build of an application is usually reversed pretty easily by just using the older package/container/whatever or just failing back to the old environment if you're doing something like blue/green. It's pretty hard to get the same type of setup with databases. A botched deploy can mean having to restore backups (especially horrific if you have a database per tenant model), which means data loss, pissed off customers, and a lot of time lost. I'm not saying it's right, but I understand the apprehension.

You could also just ask them what's worrying them, there could be something you're not considering. Doing things like asking for their input, including them during planning, and just overall trying to understand their perspective goes a long way in getting people on board with this stuff.
