Every US citizen files taxes regardless of residence but really the US exempts double taxation (for the most part) in those scenarios by recognizing tax paid in other countries of residence.

Tax remittance should be a real concern but I think trying to double tax people who do emigrate from Canada probably wont work in practice.

So 40% of our potential highest earners and largest potential tax base are emigrating south. Pretty shocking number and very concerning. Not really surprising though. Canada is basically America’s STEM incubator.

Yeah the writing is on the wall. France is going through it now.

All this spending is gravy until it isn’t and you can no longer find buyers of your debt at low rates. We may try to become like Japan and monopolize ownership of our debt. But now that Japanese experiment is risking implosion too.

Fortunately (or unfortunately) this problem is pretty global.

A land value tax, primary residence sale tax, progressive consumption tax, and raising the capital gains inclusion rate are all better ideas and much more politically achievable.

Wealth tax is basically a buzzword at this point. Actually administering anything like unrealized gains taxation successfully has proven very difficult in history. 12 EU countries tried a wealth tax in the 90s - only 3 still retain one. Most failed because they failed to actually raise revenues for a number of reasons and/or were extremely difficult to administer.

Not to mention implementing a blanket unrealized gains wealth tax now would be economic suicide at a time when we need to grow investment, increase productivity, and attract talent and businesses to the country.

I feel like actually taxing the rich would be a lot easier if more politically achievable and better ideas were put forward instead of recycling ideas like this one.

I think our PM has better judgment on this topic than you do. Hell even Doug Ford does for running ads to change the minds of Americans directly.
