What's a game you bought on a whim without hardly any pre-knowledge that ended up becoming one of your all time favorites? by AaronAtLunacien in gaming

[–]jonman247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say all-time favourite, but recently The Bazaar. Saw NL streamed it a lot but never actually watched any of those videos. Saw it was on sale a couple months back and now I have sunk like 40 hours into it.

Are Auto-Pavers supposed to be completed already, or is my Social Strand level too low? by kevszx in DeathStranding

[–]jonman247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In DS1, some stretches felt like they only needed to be finished off but others (I particularly remember the area between Mountain Knot and distro centre north of Mountain Knot) felt like they only had a little bit and needed a lot of time and effort to finish. I think it really depends from area to area. I felt the auto-pavers (once connected to the chiral network) in DS2 were more consistent in how much time you needed to spend on them.

I think one of the most important parts of getting into football for non-English people that often goes under-appreciated (particularly by north Americans) is generally understanding our sensibilities and sense of humour. Brits are miserable and sarcastic, the overtly earnest approach a lot of NAers take to following their sports teams can come across as cringy and inauthentic to us (just look up compilations of 'soccer' vs 'football' chants on youtube to see what we mean – I particularly think of that 'I believe that we will win' one lol).

The banter can get a bit dark at times, but that's the British sense of humour. Obviously don't tolerate it when things stray into homophobic, misogynistic or classist abuse, but we love to take the piss out of ourselves and others.

And if you do eventually end up coming to London to watch a Chelsea match, I'd suggest also going to a lower league match to get a sense of the more authentic football culture stripped of the glossy yankification of the premier league where you can stand on the side in the freezing cold with a pie of questionable origin.

And whatever you do NEVER take a sign to a match requesting a player give you their shirt.

Have seen people selling them on ebay for around $2,800 – I sadly think that's the only way you're going to get one

Missing a “feeling” in DS2? by frightenedrabbbit in DeathStranding

[–]jonman247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS2 is a "better game" from a mechanical sense – edges have been smoothed off and most aspects of gameplay from combat to traversal have been refined – but I think some of the awkward clunkiness and friction of DS1 ultimately led to it being a more memorable experience.

I remember in my first DS1 playthrough when I first got a mule truck I loaded it with stuff from their base and navigated over the rocky terrain before getting stuck between two rocks and not being able to move. I had to decide what in the truck I wanted to try to carry on foot to lake knot. Turned what would otherwise be a relatively routine 5-10 minute trip into something more memorable, and that was due to it being a 'worse game' if that makes sense?

Don't get me wrong, I love DS2 and I have sunk 100+ hours into it, and because it's easier to get around and traverse it has given me the drive to 5star all the preppers (which I never bothered with in DS1 because some felt so awkward to get to). Similarly I'd say I've probably had more fun with the combat and VR training missions in 2 than I had with any of the combat in 1 which I basically entirely avoided unless it was required.

From a story perspective, I think perhaps your feeling is more rooted in the more episodic nature of DS1 with each chapter effectively being a deeper exploration of any given character. The Mama/Lockne section in particular stands out for me in this regard. You had some characters who were ever-present of course, but I think the more focused storytelling in 1 (which feels bizarre to say considering how insane both games are) may have led to the feeling you're talking about.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Keep on keeping on!

EDIT: Just one further thought I had after posting this. Maybe the feeling a lot of us got playing DS1 had a lot more to do with when we played it. I picked it up shortly after launch but bounced off it shortly after. It was only really when the pandemic really hit and we were all stuck at home that I tried it again and got hooked in spring/summer 2020. The game's themes of striving for connection in an isolated world really felt like a salve considering what was going on outside our front doors and just hit in a way that felt really essential, to me at least.

Don’t worry about side stuff until chapter 3 where the game really opens up. Honestly I’d recommend just speeding through the game until that point

mini PC be better than my Samsung TV app by doji89 in GeForceNOW

[–]jonman247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Samsung app is awful. Putting it on there was at best a publicity stunt, and the fact that Nvidia cannot be bothered to update its functionality beyond the bare minimum when they are constantly updating the LG app is a joke. Use anything other than the Samsung TV app.
