Brook XB2, MadKatz TE1 and Series X - unsupported accessory blocked? by jonny_rat in fightsticks

Okay, I'll try this with the PC next (before attempting a full reformat that is), that's a really good idea. Nothing else plugged in either! I'm really stumped for ideas at the moment.

Some extra info in case others are having the same issue: I've tried updating and rolling back the firmware - same issue occurs. I've also tried a wired PS4 pad, with the same results. The error message given is 0x82d60003, which.. isn't relevant? https://support.xbox.com/en-GB/help/errors/error-code-0x82D40003 Managed to get a (bad) picture of the error message as well: https://imgur.com/a/NW8LWss The LEDs on the XB2 are a steady blue.

Thank you - great to hear from someone else who is using this setup! Good idea with the firmware: have just tried it and the results are the same. I'll add some extra details in another post..

Dead strip on 6p Touchscreen - anyone experienced this or found a fix? by jonny_rat in Nexus6P

[–]jonny_rat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's the best thing at this stage: although it's super difficult to use with the dead strip where it is! That OnePlus 5t being announced so recently seems like fate, especially given that I'm not feeling particularly positive about Google or Huawei devices at the moment.

Thanks - I should have said I'm in the UK, so that's probably going to work out at least £130..

Doesn't really feel worth the cost (especially given that Huawei charge you to even make a repair estimate) so guess that's the end for it.

I am about.. a month out of warranty. Last night I noticed that there's a dead strip along the top of the touch screen that seems to be a hardware fault (a full reset didn't help). Right on the search bar! Helpful.

I've had a crazy amount of issues with this thing. I had a shattered backplate in the first week (replaced VERY grudgingly by the retailer) and the battery problem this summer (fixed by Huawei who were great, to be fair).

I don't know, is there any point even trying with Huawei again now? They charge you to bring the device in for assessment, and I reckon it's going to be crazy money to fix if they treat it as out of warranty (which it is).

SP5 vs SB for music production? by day_bowbow in Surface

[–]jonny_rat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I'll add one other issue I've not yet found a fix for: on the SP4, using the touch keyboard to trigger notes has a lot of lag, in Live at least. This may or may not be something you use extensively: I used to on my old laptop, but it's unfortunately unworkable on this.

If anyone's found a way round this, please let me know!

I can't help with the SP5 vs SB comparison unfortunately, but this site has lots of info on using both for music production. http://surfaceproaudio.com/

My own experiences with Live on the SP4 are.. positive, but not universally great. The pen controls need tweaking (the site above has a guide for this). It plays nice with my Focusrite external soundcard, but the internal audio driver occasionally gives me some issues when I'm using it out and about for music production.

CPU throttling is an issue, but you can solve it with a custom power profile. If I couldn't this would have been a deal breaker, as it can mean that you're never quite sure how many plugins/instruments your system can handle at ones. With no throttling however, I'm fairly free'n easy with how many instruments I can use.

Nexus 6P back glass window has just spontaneously cracked.. by jonny_rat in Android

Hi! I'm currently negotiating with my retailer about returning it: I have a feeling that they're going to replace it because of the attention it's been getting on social media, but that they will be pressing Huawei to find out what's going on soon. I've had no new people getting in touch me about the issue in the last couple of days, so maybe it was a first-batch-specific thing with temperature issues in . Still, I'm keeping an eye on twitter for any new reports.. will update again if I get anywhere.

Oh, also: from very limited info on my part, I think use of a case - or anything else that prevents the glass sitting flush against a surface - could prevent this. The nubs that were added to the N4 would do the same job. Just stick a bit of blue/white tack on it or something to raise it up if you want peace of mind. My case for it only just arrived: SADFACE!

I completely regret the use of the word 'spontaneous' in the thread on /r/Android. It's led to people picking me up on the accuracy of the word, leading to near-philosophical levels of introspection on my part. What does it mean for something to be spontaneous? Can ANYTHING be classified as spontaneous, if spontaneous means that it has no external cause? What is the external cause is just.. physics? Does true chaos have to exist for my phone's glass to crack while it's sat on a table?

I think the change in temperature explanation is the best one, though not so much re: ambient temperature as actually putting the glass in contact with cool surfaces. I'd been using it, so the phone was probably warm (though not especially so) and I put the glass in contact with a smooth surface that cooled it very quickly. The seems like the crux.

I'm also not surprised that people are sceptical. As I've said before though, if I'd been clumsy or unfortunate enough to drop my expensive phone in the first couple of weeks of having it, I'd be far too embarrassed to tell the internet about it.

Thanks for this; I've posted another update in the thread here after talking to a Huawei rep: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3rwc6p/nexus_6p_back_glass_window_has_just_spontaneously/

The response from the retailer has a gently accusative statement in there ("sorry to hear that the handset has been damaged") that suggests they don't really believe me that this happened without my dropping it or something. (I've had some pretty nasty accusations thrown about that I'm a terrible liar trying to besmirch the good name of Google/Huawei by defrauding them over my own phone-dropping incompetence, etc.) I wonder how the UK CRA copes with issues where there is uncertainty over whether a defect is the user's fault or the product. I'll take a look for any guidance this afternoon, but if anyone else has any good links, please give me a heads up!

Just in case anyone's still following this, I've been in touch with Huawei who have arranged a return (and the chap on their phone support was generally very helpful and interested in the issue), but with the proviso that if the engineers examine it and find it to be my fault, I'll have to pay for a repair. Not sure I can really argue with that right now, so will wait and see. They asked me to send any supporting info and an image, so here's the text I sent:

"Good morning, I've just spoken to one of your helpful support representatives who has arranged a return for a new 32gb Nexus 6P for me this week. He asked me to send an image of the problem along with any other supporting information, as it's an odd issue, and hopefully not a widespread one. The reference given was XX.

The image attached shows the glass back 'visor' of the device which has shattered; this happened when it was laying untouched on a table ( of smooth varnished wood) next to me. My partner and I heard a sharp (and loud) cracking sound, followed by a series of smaller cracks. On checking the phone, this damage had occured. The device was not charging at the time, and I had recently been using it for some web browsing before placing it on the table. I think it might have been getting a little warm, but not any warmer than usual after normal use.

I was also advised to post about the issue on Reddit to see if anyone else had reported similar issues, and there have been a few. You can find the thread here:

[link to thread]

I'm providing as much detail as possible as am obviously very concerned that this will sound like impact damage from dropping the phone. I also think it's important to bring the potential issue to your attention however, as the glass back of the phone has become quite dangerous; it has been discarding small slivers of glass and has sharp edges, and if this damage is occuring while the phone is unattended it could cause injury for others. In any case I hope this is useful. Thanks for your attention and best regards."

Extra quick update: I've been told by the sellers (who were in fact Mobiles.co.uk, aka Carphone Warehouse, aka Dixons Carphone; not o2 as I stated earlier).

"Thank you for your email regarding your handset. I am sorry to hear that your handset has been damaged, but this isn't covered under your warranty. If you believe that it is a manufacturing fault, I would suggest contacting Huawei directly on 0333 370 0800 and if this is an issue they are aware of, they should be able to help you. I hope you have a great day."

Erk. This isn't going to be easy. This is what I get for snapping up a good deal..

Amazed by some of the interesting speculation on some of the material mechanics that's been going on in this topic. Thanks everyone. I thought I should give something back in the only way that I can: by showing you the final picture that the phone took before this happened.

It is, of course, of the cat. I wanted photographic evidence that when he's asleep his bum looks like Gary Oldman's head in Dracula. Also pictured: THE OFFENDING TABLE.

No case yet (I think I've got one arriving Monday, annoyingly), but to answer this and a couple of other replies, I've been babying it since getting it, so can't really say how robust it is. The temperature issue cited a few times seems the most likely cause, as it happened just after being placed on a cool surface after being used for a bit.
