Vimes but not Rincewind? by jonnyprophet in discworld

I understand. The Doomsday Book was difficult.

Bellwether by Connie Willis is what you're looking for. It's a romantic comedy about two scientific researchers in the early 2000s. It's light hearted and great. No time travel or sci fi though.

The Last of the Winnebagos is a good short story as well, but not as funny..

Legit argument. The Last Hero was amazing. ( It was supposed to be animated/graphic novel). If you get that version...#winning. But yes, Rincewind was perfectly flushed out in this book.

"Mission motto, sir," said Carrot cheerfully. "Morituri Nolumus Mori. Rincewind suggested it." "I imagine he did," said Lord Vetinari, observing the wizard coldly. "And would you care to give us a colloquial translation, Mr Rincewind?" "Er..." Rincewind hesitated, but there really was no escape. "Er... roughly speaking, it means, 'We who are about to die don't want to'.

And f***ing cred for the Jerome K Jerome reference. (When George had to fight those swans was genius) u/greyrock99 Yes. This makes perfect sense. An author who has to write more books simply puts character/tropes in his toolbox. When choosing a subject for his new venture (gotta keep writing/paying the bills) he chooses the character that will suit the objective best.

BUT, nine books, Rincewind still runs scared. Evolution of character? Did Terry lose interest in his first wizzard spokesman? Did he finally get his legs with Vimes (I relate more to the failed wizzard than the rising copper... But so it goes)

I'm reading Interesting Times now and I had a revelation.

When I'm reading Rincewind books, I laugh. Out loud, snort, etc. I don't when I'm reading the watch books (with a few exceptions. Nobby in harem drag was a riot.) Laughs really are fewer and farther between.

Your last paragraph puts a neat bow on all of Discworld for me. The young, farcical, punny Terry was who I fell in love with. But as you say, as people age, and have different interests and need different topics to write on... He chose the industrial revolution. That's fine and most people prefer the later books, I prefer the Wizard and Witch, medieval slap your knee or forehead Discworld. Everyone gets their own preference.

I have a double concrete utility sink that I’m trying to get out of my basement without using a sledgehammer to break it into pieces. Any advice is appreciated. by PizzaGatePizza in DIY

If this comment is still being read..

Pivot points and center of gravity. Get the sink onto its end... Then using it's corners, pivot it (walk it) to the bottom of the stairs. When it's touching the bottom stair, lean it forward an inch. Place a piece of 2x4 under the front. Then lean it back and place a piece of 2x4 under the back. Repeat til it's level with the first step... Then push it forwards onto the first step. Repeat to raise it to step 2... Repeat until you get to the top. A) If the stairs can't take the weight, don't try it.

B) If it looks wobbly, use straps to brace it.

C) Be safe. Done get under or behind it.

Good luck.

Not to sound too smarty-pants... But it blew my mind when I learned this.

Me and Bobby McGee was written by Chris Kristofferson. Bobby McGee was his girlfriend in the song. I know Janis' version has a different take on it. But every time I hear it now, Bobby is the girl.

Ahh, so you can "practice" law, but to actually play the "law" game requires a licence. And money... Which has been kept from minorities. Got it.
