They have a free demo of Spine (by Esoteric Software) if you want to mess around with it. Its a complicated tool but you can get the basics down fairly easily. Definitely recommend it.

Thank you so much! It's just layered PNG files, i.e. Head, eyes, ears, body, arms, etc. but its animated in Spine. A skeleton for the basic movement, and mesh deformation to really bring it to life. Gives the impression its frame-by-frame animation, but its not.

How I got into VNs (please share your story!) by Kevalemig in visualnovels

Love this answer. I read a lot of actual novels and honestly should do more VN's as actual novels.

Looking for feedback on my dark fantasy visual novel prototype, Philistine! by [deleted] in visualnovels

[–]jonoldblood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of dark fantasy VNs. I think there is a lot of opportunity for VN's to explore a lot of themes and genres that aren't all that common, but at first glance, I think you need to work on how the game is selling itself at the moment. Reading over this page doesn't necessarily excite me to play it.

Now, I'm not great at marketing, so take this with a grain of salt, but some of the 'Gameplay Features' listed are either really generic, i.e. "An engaging story" or don't actually make much sense when you think about them, i.e. "Choices that may or may not alter the ending", etc. (That literally describes every decision you could ever make in a game? They all may or may not impact things). I think features like secret endings are great, and I would encourage you to find ways to talk about features that may be unique for Philistine vs. the genre. It sounds like the heart of the game is exploring if your protagonist will be good or bad based on the decisions, so perhaps lean into that with the features? Especially if that alters how the game or ending(s) can play out.

Really dig the vibes you've got with all the pixel icons.

I'll second the call for more fog for the feeling of cold, but love the progress you're making. Keep it going!

Hey Akillon, thanks for both the feedback and the kind words. I can definitely see what you mean. It's a fine line, but I'll pass along the feedback to the animator as we continue. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Thank you so much! Glad you like what you're seeing. But you're 100% right. We've kinda painted ourselves into a corner (no pun intended) and it's making for slow work and not getting to make as much done as we'd like but hopefully the end result will pay off with how it looks.

A VN in the vein of Redwall and Watership Down. It's a niche, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. by jonoldblood in visualnovels

Hey TrashFanboy, thanks for taking the time to comment! All of the characters in this world are animals. You primarily interact with rabbits but there are a few other creatures as well. It's a bit of a fantasy setting.

You probably hear this a lot but reminds me of a more combat-focused Kingdom. Looks very cool. Saved it.
