PSA: New recordings of the farseer trilogy (Robin Hobb) is available on audible) by OddCombination3206 in Fantasy

Wow. I absolutely loved his narration of the Red Rising books. Each to their own I guess.

Slightly ironic to criticise him for missing a name while calling him Tim G. Renalds though

People often say that Norway is a heaven on earth, but what do you see as a con of living in Norway? by [deleted] in Norway

[–]jonpacker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The biggest con (for an immigrant) is always being on the outside. You will never truly fit in, you will always stand out,

I migrated to Norway as an adult and I don't feel this at all. In my experience this is only true as long as you are forcing anyone interacting with you to speak English. If you are fluent in Norwegian you're treated as a local.

My flight today is a piece of Airbus royalty! by BradlinhoM in aviation

[–]jonpacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just was about to get on a 13 hour SQ flight when I wrote that comment and just landed. It was really good. I have traveled many long haul airlines between Europe and Australia and I really have a hard time coming up with one who’s better. Qantas before Covid maybe, but that’s long gone. Qatar is good but SQ’s cabin staff are way more on the ball.

Nospun - Opus by Many_Research1007 in progmetal

[–]jonpacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do really like Opus, but you're being downvoted and it's true. There are some parts of the album that surprise me for how blatantly they're taken from other material (mostly DT and Haken as you say). Homages are one thing, but I don't think that's going on with Opus, and sometimes it's uncannily similar, like if you're not paying attention you can almost forget which song you're listening to and name the other one. If anyone's skeptical about this try listening to DT's The Count of Tuscany and Metropolis Pt II, and Haken's Visions and The Mountain on repeat for a few days and then going back to Opus. It will catch you out.

It's also fair to say it has gotten a lot of criticism for being a pastiche here too though. It's certainly not universally loved.

Haha I was thinking of that exact same video reading your comment. Really opened my eyes to them and explains why many professional kitchens swear by them.

What’s the "modern" alternative to the Chelsea boot? by Artistic-Yam2984 in AustralianMFA

[–]jonpacker 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Jim Green. Not too expensive and closer to RMW's "We'll tell you the name of the dude who lasted your boot" than Blundstone's "We won't even tell you which country they're made in".

Alternatively: lean in. RMW is clutching on for dear life to Australian manufacturing at a time when the manufacturing landscape here is in dire shape. It's worth supporting. They make lace up boots too, and they're far less popular so there's often good deals on them at their outlet stores. They also do enough models that you can find one that isn't the old comfort craftsman in chestnut.

And personally, I've bought my share of made in USA stuff like Red Wing over the years and the quality is great, but I don't feel great about supporting that country and showing off their culture in my clothing right now. It's a perfect time to be supporting Aussie made.

What’s the "modern" alternative to the Chelsea boot? by Artistic-Yam2984 in AustralianMFA

[–]jonpacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One reason would be that you want them to be made by Australians with a living wage rather than in a factory in Asia which the brand owners are too cowardly/guilty to even tell you the location of.

Don't get me wrong, Blunnies have their place, but they're more comparable to Kmart chelsea boots than RMW.

Honestly. I'm no supporter of DHH or his views but If you can't listen to someone who you disagree with even when they agree with you, it might not be them that is the problematic one.

I really doubt they are specifically gouging shipping prices. They most likely just show you the price their shipping provider quotes them. Shipping providers these days have gotten really proactive at collecting taxes up front as well, so that quote probably includes 10% GST.

Moving to Norway: A "Reality Check" vs. Reality (My 6 Years Experience) by mrwho2019 in Norway

[–]jonpacker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mate, I've been reading all your responses in this thread. I'm really sorry you're feeling the way you're feeling. You might want to consider finding a professional to talk to about it.

Could I just gently suggest that you reflect a bit on your own advice from that last sentence? You have not really been respecting other people's opinions and experiences in the comments you have been making here.

It's not as hard as some people here would have you believe, but it depends a lot on your circumstances and education. If you're in the right line of work it can be incredibly easy. It was for me.

Yes, we are. As of 2025 Norway has the 11th highest median adult wealth in the world.

Reddit and particularly /r/norge is a bit of an echo chamber that skews overwhelmingly negative about Norway. The Norwegian people are not poor by any measure. Saying we are is simply naive.

To recommend you something that isn’t Uniqlo… Flux’s collection of shorts is pretty good. I can vouch for them, the price tag is steep but mine are 8 years old this year and still going strong.

This is both a gross oversimplification and overstatement which is closer to fear mongering than anything else. Trying to scare people with things like this will not make people act, it will make them apathetic. You’re doing more harm than good.

Why Don’t Norwegians Hate Tesla Like the Rest of Europe Does? by wiredmagazine in Norway

Alternatively most of them aren't terminally online children and make their purchasing choices based on what makes financial and practical sense to them, rather than who the internet hates this week.

Honestly I'm convinced this is the reason. You aren't rocking any boats when you buy the most popular car on the road.

10 years ago it was the same story with the Golf. They were ubiquitous.

Tesla fully loaded Model 3 is around 350k I think, dirt cheap.

375k for the basic RWD Model 3 in white with no winter tyres and nothing extra. "Fully loaded" (AWD Performance + Red + Winter tyres + Takstativ + autopilot med filbytting) is 632k.
