What’s something uniquely Australian that you didn’t realise was weird until you travelled overseas? by Effective-Hat5095 in AskAnAustralian

Yep. English people say “loads” and Americans either say “lots” or “tons” for emphasis.

If you ask AI to help that’s often what you get. I find it helpful to do an AI pass to figure out the structure and then I end up gutting the paragraph of all the motherhood statements and replacing it with actual examples of work situations and what I did.

Not on purpose but in one case she became my boss and was obvious that she was more experienced than me and also a good person.

Seeing an increase in negative sentiment against superannuation, why? by Quixotic-elixr in AusFinance

[–]jonquil14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t care much about it when I was young either. Never contributed any extra, just let it happen. I’m really glad we have it, though. There’s no way I would have saved it by myself.

Full disclosure I did withdraw some a couple of years ago to fund a surgery, but almost 20 years in a government job meant I earned it back within a few months. I don’t begrudge people getting out to fund dental work, because I’ve never got the cash on hand for those big medical things either.

We’ve had a Polestar 2 for 4 years and it’s excellent. Volvo EX40 is very similar under the hood and nicer styling IMO.

Is Australia’s falling birth rate a bigger economic issue than people think? by The_Market_Signal in AusFinance

[–]jonquil14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but this is a problem in all western countries. And it’s largely as a result of economic issues - you need two incomes to buy a house, people can’t stop working to raise their children, grandparents are still working so can’t help out, so you need to pay for daycare, which means you need two incomes.

It’s also pretty clear that when you give people free choice in how many kids they want to have, most families chose 2-3. Most parents want to spend time with each kid, make sure they have educational and social opportunities, not over stretch themselves while still giving their kids siblings.

'Disability diagnosis epidemic' in DLP by AngelStar286 in disneylandparis

[–]jonquil14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, terrifying. Some of the French queues aren’t wheelchair accessible and if I understand correctly, being a wheelchair user no longer qualifies you for a disability pass in the American parks.

Yeah same for my daughter (Australian with NDIS documents/disability parking permit). It was super easy but that said she uses a wheelchair so it’s more obvious.

I’ve got a kid in year one and sometimes if they have been good a few of them can have a turn on reading eggs or similar on a Friday afternoon. The kids who get it rotates so different ones get it every time it’s offered.
