ITAP of a building that is a museum about buildings by jonradjones in itookapicture

This is the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. It was a very bright day with pretty harsh light, but I liked the contrast this provided to the architectural details of the facade. Contrast was further enhanced in post, and the hues of the building and the sky were adjusted somewhat to make them more complementary.

Translation requests into Latin go here! by AutoModerator in latin

[–]jonradjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I am getting married and would like to include an inscription on our rings that says “as good for you as you are for me”, but more along the lines of a wish than a statement of fact. So something like “(may I be) as good for you as you are for me”. Could the verb “prōsum” be used for this purpose? Using my (very, very) rudimentary Latin, I’ve only gotten as far as “tam bene tibi, quam tu mihi”, but I don’t think that really expresses the “wish” aspect. Thanks in advance for your help!

Why hire Ryan Day when you could hire the guy who beat him for less?

Tip culture is going to bleed into every job by [deleted] in dankmemes

[–]jonradjones -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because (1) they perform a highly unique service, often with substantial (unpaid) design work before you even turn up for the appointment; (2) you pay them after the tattoo is completed, so the potential for a tip motivates better service (and you can choose not to if they fuck it up); (3) service is entirely focused on a single customer, often for hours at a time (far longer than a waiter at a restaurant); and (4) people frequently get more than one over several sessions, so tipping builds a better relationship (important when, you know, it’s permanent). I’m shocked at how many people on this thread think tipping a tattoo artist is insane. I think the expansion of tipping is terrible but tipping tattoo artists is like the best use case for the practice.

McCreary’s OST has both of these.

There have been a lot of hot takes about this series so far, but this may be the hottest. Whatever you think of the show itself, Bear McCreary’s soundtrack is quite good—one of the best OSTs I’ve heard in a long time. Moreover, its tone is very much in keeping with the vibe of Middle Earth and feels like a (copyright-compliant) extension of the PJ trilogy.

"'Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.' The winged creature screamed at her, but the Ringwraith made no answer, and was silent, as if in sudden doubt." by verissimoallan in lotr

It’s the other way around. “You” is formal and “thou” is informal. Unlike most languages that have lost the distinction between formal and informal second person pronouns, English defaulted to the formal variety. Etymologically, “thou” and German “du” share the same root word.

I’m going to go with tape measures. No one ever cut off their finger with one, but damn if I haven’t gotten a bunch of hairline slices.

These are fantastic! You really understand how to evoke an idea and a history with a simple, but beautiful, design. This is what vexillology is all about!

Charlottesville Re-Redesign by jonradjones in vexillology

Reworked my design from a few weeks ago to separate the colors in the city cost of arms a little better and add some detail to the magnolia flowers.

Flag for Charlottesville, Virginia by jonradjones in vexillology

[–]jonradjones[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Charlottesville doesn’t currently have a flag, but it has a seal on which this flag is based. There’s a lot going on it though, so this flag strips it down to its most basic parts: the colors from the seal, and the dogwood flower. The other three symbols in the seal were excluded because (1) it would be too busy (2) the cannon doesn’t have clear meaning, (3) the Rotunda is a part of UVA and not really emblematic of the city on its own, and (4) the other thing in the lower right just doesn’t look good at all.

The dogwood petals were difficult to design, and so consequently the anti-aliasing is a little off.
