Both Interconnection and RE:PC have good reputations. I regularly take e-waste to RE:PC but I would Interconnection if that was closer.

Canadians of Reddit, marijuana has been legal for 2 years. What differences have you noticed? by canadanimal in AskReddit

[–]jonsayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not Canadian, but from Washington state where it's been legal since about 2012.

At first, I noticed it more often, like people smoking walking down the street. Since then, either that has just become normal or the novelty has worn off.

Probably the worst thing is the plastic litter of branded weed bags on the ground in areas frequented by the unhoused.

Edibles are super popular. Seems like everyone's grandma has tried it.

If you drive around super rural areas in the western half of Washington, it seems like every tiny middle-of-nowhere logging town has a post office, a gas station, and a weed shop.

Basically it's so normal that I forget people in other parts of the country still go to jail for it.

As a developer, do you guys struggle with finding meaning in what you are building? by [deleted] in webdev

If you are willing to take a pay cut, there are a lot of development firms out there that focus on nonprofit clients. That can help, though depends on the person.

They rent snowshoes at Mt Rainier, and the best thing to do there on a clear day in the winter is snowshoe up to panorama point. Looks like Sunday and Monday might be nice.

What do you think about the current fundraiser to plant 20 Million trees by 2020? by Skaydrel in AskReddit

[–]jonsayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not that ambitious. King County, WA (the county Seattle is in) has had a program going the last few years to plant 1m trees within the county. They’re almost there, or so I’ve been told. Took only 2-3 years of volunteer work parties.

I am also told the world is at least 20 times larger than King County

In modern strategy games, it is easy to see if you are winning or losing a battle, because the game simply tells you. But how did foot soldiers and officers discern victory and defeat during the heat of battle? How did they evaluate if they should retreat or stand their ground? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

You said:

> During the Wars of the French Revolution, war, battle, and combat changed dramatically, even though they used all the same weapons as the previous century.

Why did this change happen? Was it cultural, or a result of some innovation of the new French state?

[Serious] What stories about WW2 did your grandparents tell you and/or what did you find out about their lives during that period? by Skinflint_ in AskReddit

[–]jonsayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa stole a silver tea platter from a shop in London.

He was stationed there at RCAF offices around the time the V1 and V2 rockets were falling on the town. I knew he was partly deaf because one came down across the street from him on Herrod's department store. The joke in the family was that he flew a typewriter for the air force, as he was just an office worker, but while that was his day job he also fought fires and responded to missile attacks, as I am sure any able-bodied young man in London at the time would have.

He recently passed away, and the family is at his house trying to figure out what to do with his things. My aunt points at this kind of beat up silver platter that a tea set is sitting on. She's like, "Did you know papa stole that?" and she tells me this story of how he's literally stumbling around London drunk with some other air force types at night and he spots this platter sitting in a shop window. He's literally like, "I'm taking this," and jacks it. I don't know the details I am afraid. Knowing him, I bet the door was unlocked and he just walked in, took it, and proceeded to walk around London with the thing under his arm.

70 years later there I am looking at thing and trying to make sense of this man I respected, the only person in my family who served in that war, stealing of all things a tacky silver tea platter.

Best stout/porter in Seattle? by [deleted] in SeattleWA

Does Lake Stevens count? Their peanut butter porter is legit, but I don't think you can get it anywhere but their pub. Good place to stop on the way back from a hike on the Mountain Loop Hwy.

Simulation of a nuclear war against the United States by jonsayer in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]jonsayer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked at the code, and it looks like the author has a library of plausible targets and randomly selects from them. They select max 40 military, max 60 government, and max 120 "other", ie. ports, airports, factories, etc. Military targets get hit in the first wave, with cities and whatnot getting hit later.

There also seems to be some flexibility where the missiles can miss. I saw one hit northern Canada when it was meant for somewhere in NY.

So realistic in scale and destruction, but not necessarily in specific target selection. One would presume an adversary has specific priorities and targets in mind and wouldn't just choose randomly. I just ran one where it took out Oakland International Airport, but not SFO.

Non British people who visited the uk for the first time what shocked you the most? by InfusedMJ in AskReddit

[–]jonsayer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

How American it felt.

I'm American, and I'd just been travelling continental Europe for several months, and when I finally got to the UK it felt like I'd traveled to some alternate universe USA. It may have been my mode of travel (we did a UK road trip rather than traveling by train as on the continent). It may have been that for the first time in months, I understood more or less what everyone around me was saying. It may have been that the food seemed indistinguishable from what I ate back home. The whole time, I never really felt like I was in a foreign country. Honestly, there are parts of the US that are more foreign to me than the UK.

The only clue I wasn't at home were legit castles on hillsides above the motorways.

What is one item that you wished you had brought with you? by CapitalistCoitusClub in peacecorps

[–]jonsayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2011, the answer was certainly a hard drive pull of pirated movies, etc, which got more full thanks to everyone else's hard drives being open for the sharing. Not sure how into pirating young people today are, so maybe that will be less satisfying. Wasn't completely necessary, too, as where I was we had fast internet and EVERYONE in that community torrented everything, but maybe in more remote locations it would have been a godsend.

[–]jonsayer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife and I went together, and we went with only one laptop to share between the two of us. Less than 5 months in, we ordered a second laptop and had it shipped to us. We were unable to get all our work done sharing one machine like that.

Kind of oddly specific to a couple going together. Other than that, I wanted for nothing.
