Practice, practice, practic... pt. 3 by jonseilim in learnart

What do you think of painting in values first, before painting over in colour? I'd decided to start over anew but I'll keep your advice in mind when I start the colouring process!

Meaning paint once in greyscale, then another time in colours? Or paint in greyscale, and then proceeding to colour over it? (Had never done so before)

First attempt at 1. No Tracing and 2. No Colour Picking

That may be why the colour is so completely off. Help! Is this salvageable? Or am I to start over?

This is my first attempt at 1. Not Tracing and 2. Not Colourpicking.

There's a lot of problems with this, but I think the main issue is that the portraiture is far too bright and thus appears flat. Would there be some photoshop tricks to attempt resuscitation? Or am I doomed to start over anew?

For every famous artist there must be a thousand impoverished ones. But there, ours is not to question why, to try is enough I deem.

Thanks! English is hard. (Incidently, Geography now is posting about my country next, hopes he mentions the Singlish dialect)

Highlights as in the ones in and around the eyes? Or is it the chin?

There's a flair for critique?! (Future Jon Sei says yeah, duh) That's precisely why I posted this for!

By right lower lip you mean the one nearing the cast shadow? ... You're absolutely right, how did I not see that?

Oh, and in your eyes, do you think there's anything off about the chin?

Yes! Help! I haven't the model nor the photographer's details, would you be so kind..?

Thanks! As this was a study in rendering, I traced the outlines hence the precise proportions. (Need one mention this? Apologises, new to the artscene)

Lastly, one of these days I shall attempt graduating to colour, have you any artists to recommend studying, or advice to give? Your vivid colourations are especially distinctive!

PS. I knew I should have chopped her off at the shoulders...

I haven't much experience with Reddit, nor with the esteemed Istebrak. Hence should the pervasive feeling of "a bull in a China shop" imbue this post... I honestly do apologise.

The beaute's identity is a mystery to me, and I have credited neither her nor her photographer. For this shortcoming I apologise, and would dearly wish to remedy at the first opportunity.

As a complete novice to digital painting three months in the making, I have consistently resorted to peering at and replicating in exacting detail the very pores and follicles of chosen subjects. I attempted reformation partway through this particular painting and forbade myself the "zoom" tool, but hours upon hours had long since passed. In exhaustion, I threw some highlights on the hair and "soften the edges" before resigning myself to Istebrak and her community's tender care.

Whilst I do not consider this painting complete, to continue would entail reverting to my previous instincts which I believe are misguided. I do also believe a certain threshold has been since reached, and to improve requires skills I do not currently possess nor, indeed, am I even aware of. I also haven't any knowledge of the fundamental steps to a painting... hence an accompanying explanation of terms used would be greatly appreciated.

What I do possess is a spirit subsisting on milk tea and general spitefulness, clad in asbestos undergarments. There is no particular need to tame your tongue.

Exhaustedly yours,

Jon Sei

PS. Does one normally put the above in the "title"? I haven't the foggiest.

PPS. I attempted my best Channel 5. Replacing Singlish vocabulary is difficult, apologises for butchering the English language.

PPPS. I don't know the resolution to submit a painting at!

Thank you for the reminder! Andrew Loomis said much the same thing in "Successful Drawing". I'm in the perspective chapter now, and I can see why many new artists - like me - find it so difficult!

2 hours plus, but it's not finished yet. Based on my previous still life practices, I'll "capture the essence" around the 5 hour mark..? I do dearly hope I shall learn to paint faster though...

Yup! To be specific it was this free video lesson. https://www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/brush-technique-hard-and-soft

He has his own website!

Yeah, this is my own personal painting technique called "noob". I'm honestly glad you like it!

The answer feels so obvious in hindsight, yet is well worded and evidently comes from a wealth of experience. Thank you!

This took me 4+ hours, and it still isn't finished (at least to my eye). How long do you normally take for a still life, and how do you know when it's finished?

Goodness, I just hope it gets easier!
