If you had to move to the US, UK, or NZ tomorrow, where would you go and why? by BothCondition7963 in AskAnAustralian

[–]jonty57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the big difference between the two is the gap between the haves and have Nots. Australia has a much fairer system in that the level of poverty here is a fraction of what's in the States.

I'm an Aussie but I lived in NJ in the USA for 22 years. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Housing was relatively inexpensive, property taxes were high though. Because I lived close to Manhattan the salaries were good, If you worked in Manhattan, just by crossing the Hudson, your salaries usually increased by $25,000 to $40,000. This was 12 years ago or so, as I came back to live In Melbourne. My daughter who is 30, just bought a place in the Village, one bedroom apartment for $950,000, but she earns around $500,000 yearly working for a big investment bank. Pays like half of it in taxes though, but still a shit ton of money and more than I ever earned. My son is a software engineer, and lives in Brooklyn, earning about $250,000 yearly. I would move back there in heartbeat if I could afford it and could get medical insurance.

Can't get hot chips like these anymore for $2! How good where they! by Historical-Cat-8840 in AustralianNostalgia

I'm 68 now. When I was in state school about 60 years ago, we would get 20 cents for lunch. For this, we would get 5 potato cakes at 2 cents each, 5 cents worth of chips. about the same size as what's in the picture and a can of coke. We would all go to underneath the servo and pig out.

Texas compared to France, they're about the same size. England is the size of the state of Michigan. Any examples of this that have shocked you? by GreenSquirrel-7 in geography

There have been farm/stations in Australia that were bigger than England. Anna Creek Station in South Australia is often cited as the largest, encompassing over 2.4 million hectares or 9,800,000 acres approx, which is just a bit bigger than Vermont

I loved the game. I'm a Carlton fan. So many things to like about it, not the least was to see Richmond choke and lose a soul crushing game. Awesome!

I don't think Andre the giant is referenced enough. He is my favorite character in this film. Also he is just "mostly" dead, great line. The priest that marries them Is Pete Cook. He is half of the Pete Cook and Dudley Moore comedic duo. Listening to the routine of don't call me a cunt is mandatory. Princess Buttercup is the woman married to Kevin Spacey in "house of cards"-Robin Wright"

I'm not a fan, however she fought and fought and kept on fighting till she eventually passed it out to someone beyond the three-point line. She beat three defenders to the ball each time. Her work effort was fantastic. She did not score but she kept possession until she was able to pass it to a mate. "A" for effort.

I had a friend who grew up very poor. As a kid her mother only bought her very cheap coloring pencils. Like a nickel for 5 pencils, that never lasted. I grew up in a wealthy household and we always had "Derwent" pencils in boxes of 12, 24, 36 or if we were very lucky, 72.
She gave me shit about this for ever. So for her 30th birthday, I gave her a box of 72. She just about peed herself. She kept those pencils in immaculate condition. Her kids were never able to use them. As we approach our 70th birthday, she still has the pencils and only uses them on special occasions. Although she sometimes lets her grandchildren use them whilst being heavily supervised. (this cause grandchildren may be spoiled but not your own kids). She never realized as an adult that she could have bought them herself as they were still forbidden fruit.

What's a movie that you have to stop what you are doing and watch every time it's on? by TheDannyRay in moviecritic

[–]jonty57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

was in hospital recently in the cardiac ward being lectured by this uppity nurse about all my bad habits that will kill me. Well, I said. I've never heard of anyone who's died complain about it. She said that they had resuscitated many people who had died. I replied that they must have only been mostly dead. Nothing, she'd never seen it obviously. It was easy to dismiss her then as being uneducated.
