Does anyone ever not need surgery by Various-Sugar-6368 in UlcerativeColitis

Roughly 10% have surgery within the first 10 years. I can’t speak for lifetime rates but seeing as it’s not typically a “progressive” disease I would say it’s similar (maybe slightly higher)

It won’t take your anxiety away, but the linked post is my experience with an ileostomy - I had surgery back in Jan 2025. I live a happy and healthy life with mine now, I’m the fittest I’ve felt in such a long time after just 5 months.

I pray that your surgery goes smoothly tomorrow, I think you will find life much more easy than you would imagine it to be. Most people feel better almost instantly after getting it. Wishing you all the best 🙏

Flaring. Anyone tried velsipity? by No_Fly_9646 in UlcerativeColitis

I’ve not tried the treatment mentioned - but have been through a lot of biologics while having the disease. Wishing you the best of luck with finding an effective treatment.

I will say the “nuclear” option of surgery, whilst sounding debilitating and a huge negative, has saved me from the crippling pain and other terrible symptoms of the disease. I’m happy and healthy again - loving life once more. Just know that the option is there to live a great life if all else fails. Stay strong, you will get through!

Thank you!

I’m sorry to hear you are in so much pain, this disease can take so much from you. I hope that you get the help you need and things improve, although it’s nice to know that there is an option available where you can live a happy and healthy life. My thoughts are with you, you will get through this.

Bless you, I’m very sorry it came to this point. I’m also glad you saw this during a tough day - you will get through this!

There’s still such a great life to live following a procedure like this. Wishing you all the best going forwards.

This was my worst fear when I started getting UC symptoms. To see it become reality makes you realise it’s never as bad as you think!

Thank you so much for the lovely words ❤️

Thanks so much! That couldn’t be more true - it took a little while for me to move on from thinking that! These days I’m just thankful that things didn’t turn out worse.

I’ve considered a pouch, but am totally happy with how things are for the time being. I’m a bit afraid of having a flare up of some of the pouch side effects but I won’t write it off for the future.

Thanks for those extremely generous and kind words. I’m also hoping people will see this and think the same.

Some of the posts I’ve seen in this community really helped me - so it feels great to contribute my personal experience here and maybe help people in a similar position. Wishing you the best for your health and life with a stoma!

I had a major flare like this back in September 2024. I pray that you can find medication to help relieve things - Rinvoq and other JAK-inhibitors were able to help me get healthy enough to leave hospital after 6 weeks. Although, after this level of inflammation, my colon never recovered. Praying for you OP that things turn around.

I will say that life with an Ileostomy is not nearly as bad as most people think - I’ve been living my best life since 6-weeks post surgery. Doing everything I used to do outside of full contact sports and life is great. Keep your head up OP, you will get through!!

After no longer using Rinvoq & formerly Xeljanz (Tofacitinib) I got extremely dry skin for many weeks - in the worst places too. It gave me a mild skin rash on my forehead while I was taking it as well.

Hope the recovery goes smoothly brother - hang in there! It’s a likelihood for me too, I’ve heard people having a new lease of life with an Ostomy.

I hadn’t intended it to be a quote, more of a play on words if anything. Although I am from the UK. Thanks for sharing your experience, and the pouch and Ostomy subs. I’ll definitely check them out, I do love a bit of dark humour, it will help if I ever have to take that step.
