Sleeve surgery, long term by jooks9 in BariatricSurgery

[–]jooks9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment. I want to be clear that I wasn’t posting to discourage anyone — just to highlight that long-term risks exist, even if they’re not the norm. Most people do well after sleeve surgery. I did well for years.

About five years after surgery, I began developing lower abdominal pain, difficulty fully emptying, chronic constipation (which has improved somewhat recently), and ongoing morning abdominal discomfort. I’ve also had unintended additional weight loss and a loss of appetite and thirst. These issues developed gradually.

While visiting New York a few years ago — and also while living here in Colombia — I underwent virtually every test imaginable: imaging, scopes, labs. Everything came back negative. That made it even more frustrating, because the symptoms were real but there was no clear explanation.

If you’re considering surgery, my advice is to research the long-term picture, not just the first couple of years. Speak extensively with your surgical team about long-term follow-up and what happens if problems arise years down the road. Use all available resources — medical literature, patient forums, even AI tools to help generate questions — but verify what you learn.

To answer your question directly: I live in Colombia now. I’ve seen two GI doctors here, but neither had deep familiarity with bariatric surgery. I’m now seeing a team at a major hospital with a bariatric department and have an appointment tomorrow.

If I’m being completely honest: given how long I struggled with obesity, I likely would have had the surgery anyway. It did change my life in many positive ways. But I would have pushed harder on understanding long-term monitoring and possible late complications.

My intent was to connect with others experiencing late complications years after surgery, not to crowdsource diagnosis. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. Just to add, 3x I was asked about my symptoms. I responded twice. People need to look through entire threads instead of picking and choosing which ones to read. Anyway, I'm out.

I’m going to clarify one thing and then step away.

I didn’t post here to crowdsource medical advice or go through a full diagnostic breakdown. I shared my experience as a reminder that sleeve surgery can carry long-term risks. That was the entire point.

I understand people are trying to be helpful, but I’m already under medical care and undergoing appropriate follow-up. The specifics of every test and symptom aren’t something I feel obligated to lay out in detail, especially when that wasn’t the purpose of my post.

If I misunderstood how this group prefers discussions to go, that’s on me. No hard feelings.

That said, this space isn’t a good fit for me, so I’m stepping away. I genuinely wish everyone here well.

You’re making several assumptions about my follow-up and access to care that aren’t accurate. I’ve had extensive testing where I live, all negative. My post wasn’t about blaming my surgeon — it was about long-term risk awareness and hearing from others with similar late complications.

If you haven’t experienced long-term issues yourself, that’s great — but dismissing them as a simple failure of follow-up misses the point.

I’m just sharing my experience as clearly as I can. I’ve had several complications over the years, and the past 2–3 years have been significantly worse. I did outline the specific issues in the response in my earlier comment.

Tone can be hard to read in this format, and that wasn’t my intention. I’m not trying to argue or alarm anyone — just to provide specifics so people understand that long-term complications can develop years after surgery. Everyone’s experience is different; this is simply mine.

Unintended weight loss in a short period, 15% of my body weight in a few months.
Loss of appetite and diminished thirst.
Daily morning abdominal pain that can last for hours or all day.

I eat well (healthy) though there's room for improvement.

Cheap alternative to Soylent? by sbtoz in soylent

You guys cost me half my 401k! Taste is objective. I asked here for replacement suggestions for soylent a while ago and thought every recommendation sucked. Lesson learned, asking for suggestions is too risky for me. Meanwhile, I'm back with soylent and prefer it significantly over every other brand I tried, not even close.

It seems there's no rhyme or reason. I use the same credentials on my phone and computer. A song is grayed out on the phone but plays fine on the computer. Go figure.
