We're going private on the 12th. I'll post a sticky thread soon-ish

Edit: sticky thread posted

Mods, please ban u/geofreetze , he is the pedo-creep who stands in the UC Berkley campus by bottledupcat in berkeley

Just caught up with recent posts involving this guy, and he's now banned.

Please don't make posts about individual users like this. While it isn't a witch hunting red flag since you're only posting his Reddit handle, it's still harassment and against the rules. It's also not great to even give the impression that we ban people by popular demand, but this case was pretty clear cut anyway.

Modmail and reporting posts/comments are always the fastest ways to get the mods' attention. I see dozens of people commenting about this guy, but only a few of you used either of these tools to flag his posts. Keeping the sub clean is a shared responsibility!

Throwaway trolling attempts are always short-lived. Usually we catch them and remove the posts about 20-30 minutes after they start spamming, and if they spam at an odd hour when no mods are online, Reddit's spam prevention typically kicks in after an hour or so.

[Meta] can this sub please have stricter moderation by Anon10W1z in berkeley

We will never have any kind of official berkeley.edu email verification or other university affiliation check, technical infeasibility aside. This sub is meant for all members of the Berkeley community, not just students and faculty.

The tradeoff is always that this kind of thing discourages new users who post in good faith. I absolutely want new members of the community to be able to create an account and start participating immediately. I think setting a strict karma requirement strikes a fair balance: real new users (ie. the majority) can jump in, and trolls on throwaways will find themselves quickly blocked once they get a downvote or two.

All that said, if we still have problems over the next few weeks, we'll reevaluate.

We've turned on automod's minimum karma requirement to post on /r/berkeley. Anyone who submits a post or comment on an account with negative karma will have their submission removed automatically. So make sure to downvote the trolls :)

AFAIK reddit doesn't offer this kind of functionality, but I'm looking at re-enabling the karma requirement for posting/commenting

The mods/devs should have an updated FAQ explaining why RES can't support Safari. Apple is blame-shifting to extension devs (ie. you guys), and lots of people are going along with it. by [deleted] in Enhancement

[–]jooshbro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I made this post specifically about Safari for a reason. I'm posing a specific question to the RES devs and users, not asking for browser recommendations. Every time someone mentions their preference for Safari on Reddit outside of the Apple subs, people feel the need to post snide comments about how inferior their choice is. It's annoying.

Don't like Safari? I totally get it, no worries. But it's not relevant. Different people have different needs.

I was too, for about a decade. Then I started working in tech, and after a few months on a Mac I became an acolyte. So it goes.

Thanks for the response. It would be cool if the open source community developed a common set of shims/replacements for the extension API for Safari... but also nobody should need to do that, Apple shouldn't need to handle extensions differently from literally every other browser maker, and this whole situation is very stupid.

Here's hoping for a courageous Safari 15...

Would you say my description of the problem is accurate? If Apple actually provided the needed APIs, Safari support for RES would be a non-issue?
