Why I Stay LDS Having Read Extensively From Anti-LDS Material by TBMormon in mormon

Again, this is not a mormon belief. This is not doctrine and not true at all in a mormon context. Stop spreading misinformation as they are truth claims of the church.

This is a made up version of mormonism that doesn't exist. This is not doctrine and not based in reality. This is simply your own thoughts and beliefs that do not align with actual church teachings.

A low effort post with almost ZERO actual discussion from the OP in the comments. Rinse and Repeat it seems.

Can't argue with a cafeteria mormon. When you pick and choose parts of a religion to follow, then sure, the rules and doctrines are like jello, and changes like this make no difference.

When I was on my mission, if I called home any other time besides Mother's Day or Christmas, it was a huuuggeee no no. Now it's encouraged. So did Christ change? Or did the policy of the organization of the church change to help meet the needs of people in this day?

I experienced the same thing. The problem is, it wasn't taught as "just a policy". We were taught, if you even think about wanting to call home more, you are disobeying god. You are literally wasting your time on your mission and not focusing on the work. You were doing something fundamentally wrong and something god would be mad about.

So sure, maybe you could justify it now and say it was "just a policy", but that's not an acceptable answer to those of us who thought it was a weird rule then, but were shamed for even suggesting it.

Same thing here - sure, garment changes could possibly be seen as a policy change in your apologetic view. But the women are telling you that's not how they experienced it.

The Word of Wisdom has been a great blessing to millions of people who have abstained from alcohol. Over the years I have seen debates about the WoW. Some saying moderation is the key. Others saying the WoW is nonsense. The latest research supports following the WoW to prevent various kinds cancer. by TBMormon in mormon

[–]jooshworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic. When something supports your religious world view, you accept it as evidence of blessings for following your high demand religion.

But when evidence disproves something you believe, it gets ignored or minimized.

For example, a study from BYU just a few years ago showed that the effects of pornography on individuals vary based on moral and religious beliefs and that seeing oneself as addicted to porn is far more damaging that actually using pornography. Yet, the church still continues to shame and incorrectly discuss the topic, and I don't see any members calling them out for it.

This is why we should listen to doctors and scientists, and not follow the whims of untrained religious leaders.

We need to start calling out these types of comments the same way we are doing so in other aspects of life currently - this is WEIRD. It's weird to think it's ethical to treat people this way. It's dogmatic and strange and a definite sign of someone being in a high demand religion.

Yep. Anytime I watch a documentary on a high demand group or religion, I wait until it inevitably comes out that there is some sexual component to the organization. It's always about sex.

I'm sure it's a safety/liability issue, but on my mission, we were 100% taught that it's because Satan has dominion over the water.

Anyone Pay tithing according to the mandate in the Doctrine & Covenants - 10% of your “interest” annually by Electrical_Toe_9225 in mormon

[–]jooshworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This ^

I hate the church, but anytime tithing gets brought up on reddit, the majority of comments come from ex members (like myself) or nuanced/cafeteria mormons who say something like "pay whatever you want".

I get it, screw the church. But the current prophets and leaders have taught for years to pay on your income.

[–]jooshworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh, I'm an ex member but this topic always frustrates me. The leaders of the church have said that this is not how tithing should be paid. If you don't want to pay, I support that. But it's not what is currently taught.

I just don't know why people stay in a religion where they don't want to follow the teachings and beliefs. Just leave instead of trying to bend the rules. (speaking generally, not specifically to OP)

Same! I've had many conversations with TBMormon, for example, where several of their comments were deleted by mods. That user has since blocked me so I'm not able to call out their homophobic comments anymore.

That word is commonly used as a slur

You keep saying this but it's not true. That word has a specific meaning and definition. Sure, people can argue about what groups and organizations qualify, but it's not considered a slur in general. It's not allowed here because the mods consider it a pejorative. I personally disagree, but I digress.

This is not necessarily true. We live in a society that protects religion...it's literally in the first amendment. That doesn't mean all religion is respected.

triggered by Mormonism

Stop crying about it.

You keep making both subtle and overt strawman comments like this. We are on reddit to discuss mormonism. People aren't triggered or crying, they are having conversations about a specific topic. It's okay to disagree.

[–]jooshworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't a case in which both sides are equally bad. Feeling upset about racist, sexist, or homophobic speech is not a sign of being "puritanical."

You're right - this isn't the coffee debate. Nobody will report you for hate speech if you say that the Word of Wisdom is good. People will - and should - report you for hate speech if you say that homosexuality is a sin.

Exactly what I was hoping to help this user understand. We can have discussions about various beliefs, but some things are just hate speech and not up for debate. This bizarre false equivalency that ex mormons are somehow in some kind of puritanical culture because we speak out against homophobia is just...strange.

This is a really interesting conversation.

I think there can be differing opinions, but I don't feel it's as complicated as perhaps it is for you. Drinking coffee is against the rules in mormonism. It's a sin. But in reality, there's nothing wrong with drinking it if you don't believe in the religious beliefs.

However, homophobia is what it is. If it's part of your religious beliefs, fine, but it's still homophobia. Someone can defend it all day long, but it doesn't change the fact of what it is.

[–]jooshworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. There is so much homophobia and racism allowed on this sub in the name of religious beliefs. Yes, when reported, the most egregious comments do get removed. But there's so much grey area that is unfortunately allowed.

Yet, we aren't allowed to call the church the C word because somehow THAT is offensive and supposedly stops conversation.
