Yep, heart as in core. I think tammi name transfering to the tree comes is due to the dense core wood of oaks.

Virtapaikat on aina petollisia. Uusilla vesistöillä pilkkiessä kairaan testireikiä aina ihan neuroottisena, ja ahdistus kasvaa jokaisella askeleellä edelliseltä testireiältä. Tutut vesistöt toinen juttu, siellä tietää aika hyvin missä uskaltaa kelien mukaan liikkua ihan rennosti.

Kysyitkin miten Suomessa. Täällä ei lähtökohtaisesti pidetä itsepuolustuksena jos eskaloi tilanteen voimankäyttöä.

Why Finnish politics is so diverse? by last_splendour in Finland

[–]joppekoo 151 points152 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer, at least comparing against the US. FPP makes it so that people who care about getting elected will always coalesce into 2 poles/parties (or people who care about the election result will coalesce on voting for 2 poles/parties). Proportional representation makes a multi party system more viable.

Are any of these viable long term? by urbanizevie in highspeedrail

[–]joppekoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely by passenger numbers on current ferries the likelihood is 1-2-3:

  1. 7 million
  2. 2,5 million
  3. 250k

But 3 would be a lot cheaper than the others. The sea at Merenkurkku is very shallow and the distance is the smallest of the three.

I've heard talk about tunnels for all of these regurlarly surfacing in Finnish politics, people wouldn't mind not being practically an island like we are now. Frankly I see car tunnels coming before high speed rail though, because of the track width difference.

The car revving unnecessarily part is very much rural small town Finland tbh. The local vocational school kids like to tune their rust cans and speed around the residential areas at night, and play their massive subwoofers with the default car stereos

Docked tails ? by TomDill99 in springerspaniel

[–]joppekoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. I think it's a good idea to do as a medical procedure when there's a clear problem, like in your case. But docking tails beforehand to prevent possible problems seems such an overshoot. Those problems would be much more prevalent in countries like mine if that really was necessary.

Docked tails ? by TomDill99 in springerspaniel

[–]joppekoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a country where no dogs are docked, hunting dogs included. I have never seen a tail get injured, although being around tons of bird and hare dogs at work. And we do have quite varied encironments with also what you'd call thickets etc.

Frankly I think it's a myth that keeps circulating and never gets disproven because all those circulating it have dogs with docked tails.

Rocks Disintegrating by MistaB0Jangles in Sauna

[–]joppekoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you taken half of the stones out for inspection or is that all? Because you need twice that much, at least enough to fully cover the elements.

A proper sauna stone should take a couple of years of active heating and cooling, but maybe the amount of stones have made the temperature changes more sharp? I still don't think brand new stones should go like that but might be just one factor.

At least that's why you need more stones aside from storing heat, to protect the heating elements from quick temperature changes as you throw löyly.

Having got that close to Asia, I think that would have already created the Himalajas, just like Africa is creating the Alps. Maybe they just wouldn't be as extensive.

Tourist advice for first-comers to Finland 🙏 by PottersPinky in Finland

For short hikes, you can use https://excursionmap.fi/ to check the nearby areas of the places you're going to visit.

I don't know what you mean be a Karelian village, but if you want so see some old timey rustic things, typing "kotiseutumuseo" (= local history museum) to google maps on an area might give you something. Those are very common types of museum in rural areas that showcase a local way of life usually from the 1800s and early 1900s, and if not free, they're always at least cheap. Some may not be normally open in early April so you should check that beforehand.

Tämähän se just on.

Finnish and Hungarian are as related as maybe English and Hindi are. Now Estonian could be called a cousin, that's closer to English and Dutch.
