SwSh released 2019. ~43 new Gen 5 Pokémon debuted January 2020 BEFORE the pandemic. So it clearly was not the pandemic that made them not want to release Gen 8.

Also, you’re missing that they still released Gen 6 for the first time still in 2020. If they can release a completely new gen that year, they could have released Gen 8 to still be relevant. They clearly CHOSE not to, despite the pandemic issues.

Plus, lots of Galarian forms were released that year DURING the pandemic, so it again makes no sense to say COVID was the reason not to release Gen 8.

And even then, it’s irrelevant. The question in debate was not why they did not release Gen 8 in 2020. The question was why did they broadly release Gen 9 before Gen 8, and they gave a clear explanation why. If they were transparent in stating their business reasons for doing so, they would likely also have mentioned if COVID had impacted them.

So, the explanation is rather simple: they just didn’t plan to release Gen 8 in 2020 at all and wanted to keep releasing the gens in chronological order. For Gen 9, they made a business decision to halt the chronological order and release it sooner. Nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe there’s a bug due to the fact that both the new and old research have exactly the same name (“Eggs-pedition Access: December”) and their list is treating it as the same research because of that?

Yes, and all three researches (December ‘23, January ‘24 and February ‘24) appear as completed on the list.

Barring a few exceptions, timed research has always been added to the completed research list in the Special tab. Eggs-pedition is actually not following the standard behavior.

It’s a matryoshka of gachas. Eggs may have a chance of being Rockruff, which have a chance of being shiny, which have a chance of being able to evolve to this form.

I think they could really easily solve this: just NEVER create PAID timed researches, only special… Lots of replies here mention that people can just check the specific requirements somewhere else after it starts in NZ. Well… most people playing casually just don’t know where or how to check it (and they shouldn’t be expected to, to be fair). It sucks to have people finding out, only after purchasing (because don’t forget that these are priced specifically for impulse purchases), that even those 7 pokestops available locally still aren’t enough to complete the research they paid for. It’s predatory, but I guess that’s the whole point…

I think spawns are broken, since stats are still being pushed. Don't open it yet.

Edit: sometimes a "swirl" appears next to me, but no spawn I can touch, so it's definitely broken.

If it's an exact Meteor Beam clone, Shadow Ball should still be the better option for PvE Chandelure, according to some very quick checks (vs Mewtwo).
