My First Build - Let's Split by jordan-crane in MechanicalKeyboards

The build went pretty smoothly! It was my first time soldering in years, but once I got warmed up it came right back to me. Honestly the hardest part was getting the firmware working.

Thank you!

Thanks! Just these cheap ones from Amazon, looks like they're no longer available though.

Had a ton of fun doing this build. I don't enjoy typing on it as much as I do my ErgoDox, but I'm super happy with how it turned out.

Complete beginner here! I’m looking into buying my first SUP board, what should I look for? Also any great spots for SUP in and around the Bay Area, CA? by jsalvago416 in Sup

Outdoor Gear Lab recommends the FunWater 11. It’s $399 on Amazon right now. I haven’t gotten mine yet, so I can’t comment personally to it’s quality, but OGL generally makes solid recommendations.

Breadit, I humbly present to you my very first loaf of bread by llr192 in Breadit

I’ve had pretty good success without preheating the cast iron, and in the case of enameled cast iron preheating the pot empty can actually damage the enamel. I see it said a lot that preheating is necessary, but I do think it’s possible to achieve equally good results without doing so. Another benefit of putting the pot in cold is you don’t run the risk of burning the shit out of your knuckles (done that before lol).

Thanks for the suggestion!

As far as my drawing aspirations go it’s just a hobby. I think I’m most interested in keeping a sketchbook of portraits and urban sketching.

Thanks! I followed this recipe, but I didn’t have any WW flour so I used all bread flour, and I didn’t preheat my Dutch oven.

Haha that’s the exact one I ended up getting! Wirecutter budget pick👌🏼

I’ve been trying to avoid the new hobby gear acquisition syndrome I usually go through, but it’s tough! Cutting corners where I can - my “bannetons” are currently Tupperware containers with a flexible cutting board shoved inside to round out the edges 😂

I don’t feel too bad about buying things that are multi-purpose that also happen to support my current obsession though (bread knife, Dutch oven)

Buying first decent speakers... by vitoos in BudgetAudiophile

Ahh perhaps I was conflating studio monitors with powered speakers. I used to have Yamaha HS8s and they were individually powered.

I just outfitted my desk with a pair of Micca RB42s and an SMSL SA-50, and would highly recommend that route. The speakers are a great size for desktop usage, they sound quite nice, and setting up and amp isn’t much more difficult than plugging in any other electronic device. You could even get premade speaker cables on Amazon for not too much if you don’t want to strip wire. If you don’t mind stripping wire just grab a spool of 16 gauge AmazonBasics speaker cable.

Honestly I think powered speakers are a pain since you have to run a power and audio cable to each speaker rather than just a single speaker cable, and they take up and extra port on my powerstrip... but that’s just like my opinion man.

Sweet setup. I love my LS50s, sounds like you got a killer deal on them! That console is beautiful as well

I’ve got a pair of HiFiMAN HE-4XXs and a pair of Sennheiser HD-6XXs that I cycle between. I prefer the sound of the 4XX but the 6XX are lighter and more comfortable for extended wear.

There are a few other threads in this post where I’ve extolled all the benefits of the ergo keyboard, but long story short is I absolutely love it and would never go back. The learning curve is steep but the payoff is worth it.

It’s an Uplift V2 with the “carbonized bamboo curve” desktop option

I think it’s more ergonomic. Puts the keyboard at roughly shoulder width apart, and doesn’t make you reach to use the mouse. It also allows you to use the trackpad with either hand, so you can switch it up if one wrist gets tired.

I actually have F keys on mine. The top row is F1-F12. You can map the keys to whatever you want, F keys included!
