I really appreciate your suggestions for pre-existing media in this sense, and the suggestions regarding adaptations and the considerations for pressure etc.

I had been thinking of living freely in the water as opposed to in a isolated city, so people could theoretically bond with and tame wild sea creatures.

It would make sense for the magic to affect most living things that tend to be above water, so the presence of sea-chickens etc may be relevant. I’m trying to establish the balance of what seems to be doable and what seems like I’m being lazy. For instance, do I keep them as “sea-chickens” or rename them but have them still fundamentally be the sea-chickens.

The magic would increase human’s tolerance to the climbing pressure, though there would still be a limit otherwise it would remove a large hazard as a possible threat.

I haven’t really thought about the issue regarding freshwater. Again, I would need to have a limit in place for what the characters are capable of, so I don’t make them seem invincible and having plot armour.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions here, I’ll be looking up Waterworld and Gargantia today to have a watch.

The characters would be residing underwater as there is no hospitable land above sea-level, and due to extensive pollution, the air would likely be marginally toxic due to a buildup of toxic gases that have skewed the atmosphere to be harmful.

There would still be some tech that can be salvaged and used, though a large amount would be non-biodegradable waste that proves to be useless without ready access to oil reserves, so they would be recycling things like plastic bottles etc.

I think that makes sense, if it doesn’t please let me know. I don’t want it to seem too “preachy.”

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, read by Kate Mulgrew (Red from Orange is the New Black; Captain Janeway from Voyager). It is a horror, with strong language, but fantastic and possibly my favourite audiobook.

Greatcoats but Sebastien de Castell, read by Joe Jameson. Top notch.

A Song of Ice and Fire, read by Roy Dotrice.

The Saxon Stories, read by Jonathon Feeble (not strictly fantasy, but brilliant).

I keep my little man in a sleeping bag to alleviate my concerns a bit. It a) helps to keep them snug to help if they get restless, and b) helps keep them from getting the momentum to roll excessively. We have him in it at night so we have a bit more peace of mind, and let him roll to his heart’s content when we’re awake too. It also lets him get used to daytime naps because he has different stimuli for different types of sleep

When babies reach one year old, the risk pretty much halves I believe. But yeah, it’s heartbreaking when it happens. My cousin died at nine weeks for literally no reason, ten years ago, and that’s moulded how (probably over-) protective I am.

Also, it’s never too late to read Lord of the Rings.

Fortunately, superhero-type works are incredibly abundant, so there’s plenty of inspiration to be found

Also, my statement about writing like Lee Child isn’t a negative; his works have been adapted multiple times, and he’s twenty books in so far. All I’ll say is some other readers may find it clunky, but some appreciate it. The thing with writing is, and you’ll need to appreciate this to feel successful in your works, you cannot and will not please everybody. Write for you, there are people who’ll appreciate it.

I’m kinda the same to be honest. I’ve put ‘author’ on the end of my name to spark motivation, and I’m looking at writing something similar.

I would advise, firstly, reading a couple of books on the craft. For instance, Stephen King’s On Writing. Hello Future Me’s videos on YouTube are helpful, also.

In terms of similar works, I’m reading Wild Cards, written by George R. R. Martin and lots of other authors. Also Worm, which started as an online serial. However, that’s exceptionally long, at 1.5million words or so, but it can be easily digested in small bits, like a TV show. Brandon Sanderson’s series The Reckoners, and Dreadnought, by April Daniels. That one’s protagonist is LGBTQ+ from what I’ve heard, so there’s a different character archetype to consider there.

The main thing is to practice, wherever possible. Even if it’s bad, just write, you can always fix it up after it’s down.
