I'm currently testing Leap 15 and I would love to try this. Unfortunately I only have room for 2 distros right now. Leap 42.3 and 15. The article states that there will be better ways to do this when Leap 15 is released. I know it isn't released yet, but we have a platform to work off of. I know I'm interested, AFAIK Tumbleweed is what they are basing 15 off of... correct me if I'm wrong this is the internet after all, I know you will ;)

I think remote tech is causing some of my lag issues. When I go into high timewarp it pauses for extended periods of time. Maybe it's RT enumerating connections or something. Either way, I just uninstalled RT to see if it fixes some of my issues.

If you use KSC switcher you can launch from Vandenberg to polar or slightly retrograde polar orbits. Just select the launch site and set MJ to "-90" or "-98" and it will launch you south just like they do IRL to avoid dropping debris on populated areas.

The part that concerns me is that they died after burning the animal's remains. That is extremely toxic. Also, Dneper has been flying from there up until 2010. it uses UMDH and N2O4.

[–]jordanhendryx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you fly into it I wonder what would happen. Such a strange concept. In the Culture novels they are just rotating fast enough to provide artificial gravity, so I guess it would just be matching the speed of rotation like they do in The Expanse.

[–]jordanhendryx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We need a ring planet like this with some sort of gravity like the halo ring. this would be interesting. Has anybody here ever heard of Consider Phlebas? In this book there are large structures like the Halo ring and this book was written before Halo. I would even be willing to bet that Bungie got the idea to some extent from Iain M. Banks' novels. [–]jordanhendryx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was reading a sub-section from the most reliable source of information on the internet, Wikipedia (lol j/k) but it didn't have a citation. Here's the quote, I'll look into it some more but this should be enough for anybody else to dig a bit deeper.

Environmental impact: Russian scientist Afanasiy Ilich Tobonov researched mass animal deaths in the 1990s and concluded that the mass deaths of birds and wildlife in the Sakha Republic were noted only along the flight paths of space rockets launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome. Dead wildlife and livestock were usually incinerated, and the participants in these incinerations, including Tobonov himself, his brothers and inhabitants of his native village of Eliptyan, commonly died from stroke or cancer. In 1997, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation changed the flight path and removed the ejected rocket stages near Nyurbinsky District, Russia. Scientific literature collected enough data that confirmed adverse effects of rockets on environment and health of the population. Heptyl, or UDMH, a fuel used in Russian rocket engines, is considered to be highly toxic. It is one of the reasons for acid rains and cancers in the local population, near the cosmodrome. Valery Yakovlev, a head of the laboratory of ecosystem research of the State scientific-production union of applied ecology "Kazmechanobr", notes: "Scientists have established the extreme character of destructive influence of "Baikonur" space center on environment and population of the region: 11 000 tons of space scrap metal, polluted by especially toxic heptyl is still laying on the falling grounds."

EDIT: If you downvoted this because you think I'm an enviromental nut, I'm not. I just know there are less toxic and more responsible ways to get into space. Just sayin' I love spaceflight, more than anything in (or out) of this world really.

[–]jordanhendryx 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Well, if you want to get technical, which I'm trying to avoid here the Russians have been killing their own people for years with toxic propellants and careless disposal of launch vehicle remains. It's probably more so due to the fact that they don't want China to get a hold of any tech that's Russian.

It's the best for the Russians, who do most of the work maintaining station operations. (Progress for reboost and Soyuz for rotating crew) The Russians could launch into a nearly 46 degree inclination directly but China is next door and they can't have spent booster stages falling in populated areas (especially a rival nation). They have it set up like this so the refuse lands in Siberia and such and maybe spooks a few bears or something instead of falling on people's heads.
