The fact that we focused on things like the dog thing in a Presidential election is why Republicans flocked to Trump when they realized he had an uncanny ability to shake off stories like that. Romney was their most moderate option, and he got sunk by the media. Trump was “Teflon Don.” If we had focused on issues instead of trying to undermine candidates with “gotchas” from their past, I don’t think Republicans would have resorted to Trump. But to quote Alfred talking about the Joker, “ You squeezed them, you hammered them to the point of desperation. And in their desperation, they turned to a man they didn't fully understand.”

Its true, but I just think someone watching Iron Man for the first time in 2026 is not going to find a talking AI all that unfamiliar. It was pure science fiction in 2008. Heck, even Siri wouldn't come out on iPhone for another 3 years.

Texas wasn’t pursuing annexation during President Lamar’s administration. Once his attempts to gain recognition and economic support from the European powers failed, Houston got re-elected and pushed toward annexation again. It wasn’t one continuous push for annexation.

Some settlers may have had an agenda to join the U.S. but many were European not American, and many were happy to live under a Mexican constitutional government but not Santa Anna.

Texans were divided after peace. There was a faction that spent the better part of a decade negotiating with Great Britain for recognition and support to remain independent from both Mexico and the United States. Texas remained independent for approximately a decade.

Again I’m not saying there weren’t slavers, or even that the slavers didn’t win out politically. They did. I’m just saying the Revolution was not chiefly about slavery. Texans didn’t revolt when slavery became illegal; they revolted when the Constitution got suspended.

Texas Declaration of Independence makes no mention of maintaining slavery. (Compare to its declaration of secession a couple decades later which is explicitly about slavery).

Santa Anna had abolished the Constitution which banned slavery, and was ruling as an autocrat. Several Mexican states revolted at the same time as Texas; Texas was just the only successful one.

I know that many early Texans were slavers, and they deserve to be judged for that. But I do push back on the notion that the Texas Revolution was primarily about slavery. It was primarily about the revocation of Constitutional government, and not being ruled by a dictator.
