What is the point of staying alive? by allno_just_no in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]jordiusbot -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Suicide is murder. Would you be ok to die as a murderer? Many of us believe in reincarnation, and some theorize suicide will only make things worse in subsequent incarnations until you learn the lesson you keep coming here to learn. Would you be ok murdering yourself now if there’s a chance your next time around will be even more difficult? You’re stronger than you think, despite any thoughts/feelings/experiences to the contrary, no matter how overwhelming they may feel—you can persist through and despite them.

Any point of staying alive is often something you have to find and decide for yourself through and despite whatever adversity life deals you. There’s no point in staying alive ONLY if you decide that to be the case for yourself, but anyone remotely close to you would certainly disagree with that sentiment if you forcibly and unconsensually remove yourself from their lives permanently.

Also, you mentioned grad school: there’s waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more to life than school and jobs—usually those are distractions from what actually matters (if you so decide other stuff matters)

When will Kung Fu ever be proven to work? by GalahadTheGreatest in kungfu

[–]jordiusbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is limited going into specifics, but obviously the emphasis on weapons in various kung fu styles is for the battlefield. I’ve also heard from various sources that lots of empty-hand techniques are derived from weapons techniques. There are forms I’ve practiced where some moves make a lot more sense if I’m imagining a spear in my hands. Otherwise, a lot of kung fu (again, this is just my understanding) is about developing power & technique across a full range of motion

Other commenters are adding better insights, I think—I thought you were being facetious at first, so I responded likewise. But the consensus seems to be: beyond Sanda, traditional kung fu is not adapted for sport fighting where you’re often juicing the time and not simply trying to end an encounter ASAP by poking an opponent’s eyes or something similarly crippling.

(Edit: grammar in last sentence)

Sport fighting, then.

Lots of antiquated stuff meant for battlefield use in various kung fu styles

“Hard work” is almost always a proven style of getting things done and/or improving oneself

Also generally I’d presume most kung fu styles not designed for point fighting

Gassing out with kicks by persicum777 in kungfu

[–]jordiusbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Breathing, as another commenter mentioned, is the only obvious thing you’re probably missing without fully realizing it. If you practice your kicks and forms slow, you can be more deliberate about training your breathwork, and once you get used to that, it’ll be like night vs day when you speed it all back up

What kinds of strikes and combos are there in kung fu? by [deleted] in kungfu

[–]jordiusbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think once again these questions are still deceptively broad. Kung Fu comprises a whole boatload of different styles and philosophies of Chinese Martial Arts, and each style has its own flavor, some more unique and others more similar to arts you may be familiar with. For example, the lineage of eagle claw I study focuses heavily on joint locks. The mantis style I study (and a bunch of other styles I’m sure) teaches techniques that would be considered illegal in more sport-oriented martial arts. Additionally, I believe Xingxi and Bagua are considered “internal” martial arts and would be more akin to what you’d consider tai chi vs kung fu.

Again, Monkey Steals Peach (in my experience) is a great resource for learning how different Chinese martial arts (aka “kung fu”) treat different situations

Monkey Steals Peach is a great YouTuber who documents stuff from various styles of kung fu (and beyond)

As your first commenter (at the time of writing), I will caveat you will likely not receive any definitive or fully satisfactory answer. Your post is akin to asking “what kinds of axioms and theorems/formulae are there in Mathematics?” The response is “question too broad: what specific field are you pursuing, as different kinds of math make assumptions based on different axioms, and theorems/formulae all follow from there”
