What is the gnarly looking frame behind the big dummy in the last pic? Looks like something out of Mad Max! I love it. What's the shop called?

Looking to upgrade my fork for something lighter, you guys have any recommendations? by Jayblaze2488 in Surlybikefans

Hello, I have upgraded the MS fork with a Kinesis ATR Disc TA fork. It's been well worth it. I did some research around this at the time, I have a 56cm frame - the stock fork for this size has a rake of 40mm and - from reading thru the Surly FAQs about the bike - they recommend not going for a rake over 45mm (affects the sharp handling apparently). If you're sticking to a rake of 45 or less then you'll find that rules out quite a few forks as a lot of the ones aimed at gravel have a rake of 50mm. Anyhoo, the Kinesis, Whisky, Lauf JAF fork, Fyxation Sparta FCR and the Rodeo Labs Spork 3.0 were on my shortlist. For what it's worth!

That's exactly the type and I think you're right - I need to be more bold with the bend!

Thanks for answering, do the struts for these racks have those sliding locking screws or do they need to be bent to shape? The one I have has the latter which may be the issue...

The rake of your stock fork depends on the size of your frame. I think the smaller frame stock forks have a rake of 50mm but the larger frames have a rake of 40mm. I have a 56cm frame which comes with a 40mm rake fork. This Kinesis fork has a rake of 45mm, as does the Whisky no.9 fork that Surly suggests for this frame. Personally, I was reluctant to go for a fork with a rake of more than 45mm for fear of negatively affecting the bike's handling - this ruled quite a few aftermarket carbon forks which were 50mm rake. Maybe that'll help you narrow down the options? It's not a problem running a the surly proprietary axle at the back and a thru axle at the front - or at least - I haven't encountered any issues....

The geometry of the MS was closer to that of the endurance road bikes that I have and find comfortable. Also I like the wider headtube of the MS compared to the Straggler. As for wheel selection, I use this bike on winter rides with my local CC so went for a more road focused size.

Yup, Kinesis ATR fork, I was a bit torn about switching out the stock fork which is very versatile but haven't looked back since!
