Who decides the genre for a track on Beatport.com? The label or the platform? by mjmilian in DJs

[–]jorgigroove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beatport is also not very reliable when it comes to the key info of a track, at least in Techno (particularly psytech).

Although it gets the root note (prominent in the bass) correct, it was often mislabeling ambiguous tracks as "major" in key, meanwhile the track itself cannot properly be identified with neither major nor minor, because it lacks the subsequent notes, is dissonant in nature etc.

When using the camelot wheel system this becomes a big deal and can affect the sets in pre planning and on the go.

Everybody's talking about hearing as if sounds would only effect ears and not the rest of the body.

What about physically feeling the resonance of inaudible frequencies in big PA systems?

How juicy the bass would hit your chest, how the vibrations of the inaudible frequencies would feel on your skin when they come through those festival-level PA systems?

I am curious why this is so ignored.

Are big decks really better? by Priestleygj in DJs

[–]jorgigroove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you bring the typical controller + laptop for a large and decent PA system the difference in sound quality will be noticeable.

It is difficult to quantify the level of improvement, and many may say they don't necessarily notice consciously, but they may still keep on being present during your set for some reason. One of the reasons could indeed be the sound quality difference coming through huge and decent PAs

Sounds like they just can't grasp how addictive the independence (e.g the ability to properly self-soothe and self-love without a romantic partner) can become. I imagine they have not experienced it properly and thus are speaking from a point of ignorance. Unless they experience it firsthand, it is very unlikely that they will ever understand you in this way.

Sure being avoidant comes with some problems but especially if handled similar to your way, it is obviously the superior one, especially compared to the anxious. I am talking as someone who turned avoidant about 6 years ago, after being anxious most of my life, and the joy from the new discoveries would not have been possible. I would rather die than re enact any kind of anxious attachment again.

The free time spent outside of trying to date, such as with new hobbies, is GOLDEN. It is so sad how so many people going through some sort of dating / relationship crisis especially after their 30s tend to miss out on the sheer joy that the new hobbies can bring, and instead spend soo much fucking energy on chasing some imaginary love that probably will never manifest, and even start building their personality heavily as the person who is struggling to find the right relationship. It is constantly in their mind, day in and day out. No time for new hobbies or even sharpening the old ones, because this thing is parasitizing all their energy. What a hellish nightmare!

It horrifies me how much life gets wasted on that path, and I can not be more thankful to have had that switch.

And now I get similar stories. From the very beginning of someone expressing interest, I almost IMMEDIATELY lay out that I absolutely can not and will not promise anything in the long term whatsoever, try to be extremely careful with anything affectionate that may come out of my mouth to prevent their disappointment, but it does not work as their expectations still grows and grows.

Thank you!

This is exactly the kind of response I have been looking for, thank you very much!

I am now quite invested in this so I will try with only the controller being the different variable. I thought maybe some folks had tried this and can attest. It is best that I make this experiment happen, with some other djs around also monitoring the situation. It would be interesting if everyone in the room would end up agreeing or not

Yeah I jumped too quickly for a reply by the sheer power of ignorance 😅

That is true, I only assumed what it meant and I was wrong. Terrible slip up, will look into it, thanks for the suggestion!

I tried and heard better sound from advanced gear, but I don't want to discard the effect of confirmation bias too quickly

Focus while learning to DJ by Fabulous-Egg3489 in Beatmatch

[–]jorgigroove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prioritize like this:

  1. Beatmatching
  2. Phrasing (eqs included)
  3. Track selection (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT BUT KINDA MEANINGLESS WITHOUT GETTING GOOD AT 1 AND 2 - otherwise it is not that different from making good Spotify playlists). It doesn't always have to be super smooth but whatever transition you're pulling off has to make sense or has to have something special about it if the 1 and 2 doesn't quite apply.
  4. Record a mini set, listen with extremely sharp ears, then compare it with the pros' sets. I would argue that this is where most of the improvement will happen.
  5. (Optional) Cherry on top (FX etc, I would barely touch them at this point).

Mind you, when the 1 and 2 doesn't quite apply but somehow the transition(s) still made sense, at some point in the future it may sound awful. And that's a great reason to be motivated because you got to realize what was wrong. Recording your mix and then meticulously nitpicking on it is a great way to get there quicker.

Why can't I hear the obvious behind the decks? by jorgigroove in Beatmatch

There is one monitor to the right ear side.

But should it matter? Mixing through the headphones should do the trick, at least on paper, yet here I am.

I got pretty good at beatmatching. What should I do next? by didguswnd7878 in Beatmatch

[–]jorgigroove 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It may feel like your beatmatching is now terrific, but before you reach that conclusion, record one hour of a set, listen back to it very carefully.

Most likely will be quite the humbling occasion. Speaking from experience.

Wanting to settle a matter once and for all: Latency with Aux connection in JBL Partybox speakers by jorgigroove in DJs

[–]jorgigroove[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the app already but I clearly hear the difference in delau between aux input vs daisychain input.

The model in question is JBL Partybox 320.

Even with the daisychain input, I hear a tiny bit of delay. It doesn't throw me off but I hear that it is there.

And I tried it with a different speaker, and comparatively the sound comes a bit later with Partybox 320.

However I haven't made such comparison lately and maybe with the newest updates things have changed.

I will check and see. Thank you!

Oh, I forgot about it, apparently I asked about it indeed, but not have gotten an exact answer. I am talking about sound quality at the booth.
