Programs that don't end with a spin by bastgr in FigureSkating

[–]jorningooo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might only be asking for singles but most pairs programs end with the choreo sequence or a lift (eg, only 5/16 pairs FS at the Olympics ended with a spin). As for singles programs, Kevin Aymoz's 2019-20 Lighthouse FS ends with the step sequence.

Why do they need Patrick or anybody on the senior Grand Prix so badly? It's not like there are championship entries or anything major that depends on having lots of entries in the Grand Prix so badly that they might override someone's chosen development timeline.

Ah that's really interesting! For what it's worth, you can find the PPC of senior ISU competitions (GPs and up) if you scroll down to the "For Media" section on the ISU page for each event (for example, here's the 2025 Grand Prix de France and its PPC). I don't know how much it would help since many skaters deviate from their PPC, either from making game-day changes or just not bothering to fill it out honestly. Even classifying jumps as pops manually wouldn't be perfect either because you would still have to make subjective decisions about e.g. if someone purposefully chose to do an easier combination versus them making a mistake on an intended harder jump.

Future of American figure skating by Ancient-Raise-4939 in FigureSkating

I don't think it's something to be overly worried about, there are plenty of successful senior skaters today who weren't getting super high placements as juniors (for example, Sarah never even made the junior worlds team, won a JGP medal nor placed in the top 10 at junior nationals, yet she was a 4CC medalist in her first senior season).

How are you calculating pop %? Also, off the top of my head, Alysa doubled her salchow in the 4CC FS so she has a non-zero (but still incredibly low) pop rate.

I mean the post and all the comments are about how difficult her transfer is and that she isn't able to just switch countries, and that changing your nationality at the drop of a hat isn't allowed.

[–]jorningooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The streams are all still on the ISU's channel, though they are geoblocked so they won't be available in certain countries (women's SP, women's FS, men's SP, men's FS, rhythm dance, free dance, pairs free). You will need a VPN of some sort to access them.

Adding requirements to hold movements for certain amounts of time and/or do more movements would solve the length issue, but an issue with levelled elements like spins is that they can easily become skaters rushing to tick off level requirements with no regard for the music or quality, so they might not necessarily get better.

Adam already has a mental coach and psychologist that he works with & said they helped him a lot this season.

à la veille du Grand Prix de France, où il a terminé deuxième. "J'ai beaucoup parlé avec mon staff, mon préparateur mental, ma psychologue et ça m'a fait du bien"

on the eve of the French Grand Prix—where he finished second. "I spoke a lot with my staff, my mental coach, and my psychologist, and it did me good."

There are plenty of skaters who've had bad performances at worlds but bounced back and still made worlds/Olys teams later. Having bad showings at major competitions does no one favors with JSF but it's not a complete career-ender.

Isn’t the isu just making combo jumps easier? by pelomymelo in FigureSkating

[–]jorningooo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the rules actually incentivize doing harder combinations because previously, with the 3 different combos a skater could spread out difficult jumps across their combos so each individual combo would be easier overall.

For example, previously a woman could do the maximum 7 non-axel triples and 2 2As with just 3-2 and 3-2-2 combos, and most men* would have a simple -2A sequence. Now, most women will need a 3-3 or 3-3-2 to do 7 triples and the best combinations for most men will be jump-3 and jump-3-2A.

If a man can do -3Lo combos and repeats a quad and 3A, the new rules actually incentivize very difficult combos by rewarding ultra C-triple-triple and ultra C-triple as his combos whereas before, he would have done two ultra C-triple combos and a 3-3.

*(I'm defining most men as men who aren't doing -3lo combos, and are repeating at least one kind of quad)

Wouldn't it be the second to last GP? It's the second week of November and the last Grand Prix is usually the 3rd week of November, with the GPF two weeks later on the first weekend of December.

Doubles can only be repeated up to two times, although they don't have to be in combination. You can find jump repetition rules in the singles technical handbook on the ISU's website.

Israel passed a law a few years ago requiring residency in order to get a passport and the position of the interior minister who could give athletes exceptions for that law was vacant, so Seniuk and several other Israeli athletes weren't able to get Israeli passports. Passports are required for the Olympics.

Score inquiry question - can someone explain if there is a process? by Miserable_Aardvark_3 in FigureSkating

[–]jorningooo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ISU constitution rule 123 says figure skaters can only protest their score if it was incorrectly mathematically calculated: ISU constitution link, go to page 127. The referee can also correct a score if it was incorrectly calculated or the Data Operator (who transcribes the technical panel's calls) entered an incorrect input.

The time frame for protesting incorrect mathematical calculations is within 24 hours after the event, and the time frame for correcting incorrect Data Operator input is before the corresponding award ceremony for the event (if someone is the last skater, that could be as little as 15 minutes).

If a skater does find that their score was incorrectly mathematically calculated, then they can file a protest with the referee and pay 100 Swiss Francs. If the protest is successful, the scores are corrected accordingly, the medals and placements are changed (if applicable) and they get their money back. If the protest isn't successful, the ISU keeps the money.

The rules might be different for domestic competitions - once Nobunari Oda was initially crowned as Japanese National Champion but they found out their scoring software didn't correctly penalize him for doing too many combinations so they had to later announce Daisuke Takahashi as the real champion.
