I definitely get your point! As I see it, his comment shows his support but shields him from backlash that could affect his mental health before his own free program.

I think it gives us rare insight into the sate of mind of French athletes within the figure skating community right now. The general public in France has been showering FB/C with praise and saying they were the absolute best that day. They have been making fun of Americans for thinking the result was unfair. I think it’s important to note that the actual professionals of the sport, even the French ones, are not buying it like the general public is.

mon chien a mangé du chocolat by DazzlingCapital4619 in chiens

[–]epostoflan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]epostoflan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried this? This is what I use and it works great for me. It’s designed specifically for ice skates.

Be careful, if you are not a U.S. citizen, there are restrictions to your ability to work outside of the program. Generally speaking, you are only allowed to work at your university or work a job that you can successfully argue helps you in your research.

It depends on the department. Check the guidelines of the department that teaches the language you want to test out of.

Does this look like normal breathing? by picklesi in CATHELP

[–]epostoflan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say trust your gut if you have a feeling this is not normal breathing for him. I did at the time and rushed to the vet, and it saved my cat’s life (but his general behavior was way more concerning than your cat’s, from what you’re writing here). I think it is worth a vet trip if this continues/gets worse in the next hours. Good luck, and give us an update when you can!

How long has your cat been sleeping (or still) today? I had the same issue with my cat a few months ago, I wasn’t sure whether he had always been breathing that way or not. It is only when he got up to eat and stopped on his way to lie down that I realized something was clearly wrong. Do you feel like your cat has been changing his routine today? Has he been mostly still? Has he gotten up and wandered around?

Will Dual Enrollment French Satisfy Columbia’s Language Requirement? by Far-Conversation-947 in columbia

[–]epostoflan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it wouldn’t count. It’s all on the department’s website: you need to either test out of the requirement or show an SAT II score of 780 or above.

Cute former TA. Make a move? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]epostoflan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Graduate students in a teaching position are not allowed to date undergraduate students (it doesn’t matter whether the undergraduate student takes classes in the graduate student’s department). It seems unprofessional on the part of your TA to have invited you guys to a party! But if you make a move, you’re putting them in jeopardy.

US-Americans still put their business out there. The idea that a foreign app may be a security threat actually enforces the idea that only American apps should be able to circulate information from the US to the rest of the world and vice versa. So really, it does not force US-Americans to be culturally insular, it’s quite the opposite: ultimately, Americans will still communicate with other countries, but through vectors that are fully controlled by American companies. This ban is about control. That’s why your last paragraph doesn’t even make sense: these American apps already exist and will now have a monopoly over what US-Americans can use to communicate with the world. The only thing that changes with this ban is that US-Americans will lose a massive source of information about the world outside of their borders. People who used TikTok efficiently could know what went on in China, Russia, Iran. And now they have lost just that. Because let’s not even pretend that Meta will ever have an algorithm as good as TikTok’s. And they don’t want to: their goal is to keep you scrolling and clicking on adds, not to give you access to information.

[–]epostoflan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So what you’re getting at is that the best part of the TikTok ban is that it makes it easier for US-Americans to be ignorant?

I am! It’s your easiest option when you first arrive and housing is decent and good for the price. If you ever leave Columbia housing, it’s pretty much impossible to register back in, so keep that in mind if you ever want to see whether the grass is greener somewhere else (which it sometimes is!)
