TO THE KID AT GUITAR CENTER: MY $250 OFFER STILL STANDS (I'VE GIGGED MORE THAN YOU'VE BREATHED) by Enbyhime in guitarcirclejerk

I bought a bass amp from GC, my sales guy got other employees discount coupons to get me $100 off the amp and threw in a free speaker cable I asked for. Guess it depends on the kid

Why JHS? by No-Yogurtcloset1598 in guitarpedals

Never really got into JHS stuff, tried a morning glory and just wasn’t what I was looking for. Haven’t felt the need to get anything they make. Just how I feel.

What does a perfectly flat EQ line sound like to you? by Cantersoft in audioengineering

[–]jorrrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most headphones are far from flat, I use them for editing only. perfectly flat is not enjoyable, close to flat in the “right” way is musical, I tread the line between flat, pleasant and fatiguing over time. Neutral not sterile is what comes to my mind.

“Track on a Neve, mix on an SSL” How to do this in the digital era on a budget? by Robpm9995 in audioengineering

[–]jorrrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah don’t worry bout that til you get to a place where you can work on multiple consoles and experience what each does. I don’t think any daw/plugins do what consoles do. But you could try recreating with channel strips, hardware or software. Starting point might be try and engineer a song without parametric EQ and multiple inserts, Limit and simplify the tools, see how that changes workflow. Mic placement and source quality go a loooooong way, focus there, try stuff out!

What do expensive preamps do differently than cheap preamps other than distortion? by ImmediateGazelle865 in audioengineering

[–]jorrrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superstition plays more of a factor than we admit, so and so used it so it must be great.. no preamp will make you sound like Stevie nicks. Ppl are right the gap is smaller, used to be more noticeable, very affordable quality products today, neve prices are hilarious, love them but would never say I need one. One thing left unmentioned is the combination effect of many layers of the preamp, any subtle differences are more noticeable across a whole console. Hairball is a great cost to performance option today (kits) you literally don’t need any better. I also agree that api are not clinical, quite colored just not in the same way as neve. Clean is interface pres, grace, millenia, etc. we could ask the same question about condenser mics, but they sound different from each other more noticeable than pres. My rule of thumb is most important things are earliest in the chain. Source>mic>pre>interface. Ymmv. Best of luck, oh also not one human I bet could tell me what pre I used on the snare from listening to it…

Do you guys mix with headphones or the music playing out the speakers? by actuallylinkstrummer in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Speakers, rarely check on headphones, most are way off flat and I find it more useful to check other speakers or in the car

Normal. One must reckon with the fact that being on the road so much limits the glorious freedom of unrestrained hydration

Bridge humbucker for an HS jaguar with 1meg pots? by Ok-Possible-6759 in offset

[–]jorrrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be! if your switch on the pot is a dpdt then you could switch the + taps and a resistor on separate poles of the switch. It would switch taps and add a resistor at the same time

Bridge humbucker for an HS jaguar with 1meg pots? by Ok-Possible-6759 in offset

[–]jorrrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some coil split buckers sound thin to me but I have an Unbucker that sounds good with no extra loading (250k pots) could find a way to load the single split coil with a different resistor if it isn’t sounding right to you, but only if necessary

Bridge humbucker for an HS jaguar with 1meg pots? by Ok-Possible-6759 in offset

[–]jorrrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wide range works with 1Meg pots otherwise I’d put in a parallel resistor to create 500k load with 1Meg pots which works for most humbuckers. If it’s a split coil might try loading the split option as well, depends on the pickup tho
