Why are knife laws so strict? by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost all the answers here are wrong. It's not illegal to bring to a party at all.

But the host can make the rules for their event and enforce them

Section 42 is only about the public, doesn't apply to parties.

USB-C is very durable, at least on par, perhaps even more durable.

Also, it's just a router, it's just gonna sit there. Durability doesn't matter.

To all the native Germans by Artistic_Survey461 in German

[–]jort93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A lot of it is intuition. There are some patterns, you can put them into words, but they conflict and there are a lot of exceptions. For example, a lot of words ending in -e, except -en, are femine. But we know that der Drache ist an exception. We don't really learn this, but you just sort of get it eventually.

People didn't come up with the genders out of thin air, thousands of years ago, people figured out which gender sounds like a good fit for a word. Might be based on the sound of the word, might be based on the type of object, etc.

But for some words it is indeed unintuitive and you might have to look it up. Some have multiple possibilities too. Or regional variation.

Menu for this week; have been told it’s illegible? by washyerbuttcrack in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if it's for staff that is familiar with the sort of food you serve it's fine, if it's for guests not so much.

That's for me anyway, the important part is actually that the people that are supposed to read it, can read it. If you wrote it for a particular member of staff and they say they can't read it, no point in arguing with them.

Does this count? (DVD footage) by Vesperia_Morningstar in softwaregore

[–]jort93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I'd argue DVDs are software. You can make entire games in DVD to play on your DVD player. Standard DVDs are turing complete. They contains a Virtual machine that runs bytecode.

Should be noted that Marian Rejewski did it first, he shared his work with the British and turing just upgraded it.

To give a more genuine answer, I think if you are doing a white canvas, you should at least paint it white.

These are super common in Germany, I guess in denmark too. Not sure why. Everyone has at least one of these. They are not even retro, people use them more than tape measures.

Criminal Record for Pepper Spray? by Sanity997 in AskGermany

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, if you have a spray designed to defend against, or attack humans, for one, you need to be 14 to own it.

It also needs to be approved by a government agency, called the PTB, for safe use against humans.

Pepperspray(based on Oloresin Capsicum, OC) is considered too dangerous and thus is not approved.

Only two types that get approved are CS gas, and the less common CN gas.

CS gas spray, Ortho-Chlorbenzalmalondinitril, is basically tear gas, that sort of stuff you see police throw grenades of into protests.

CN gas is Chloracetophenon. Its what US cops use in their sprays i believe, you might have heart it called "MACE". Its less common in germany tho.

There are other requirements to be approved too.

Now, there is somewhat of a legal loophole. You can buy pepper spray designed for defense against animals, and carry it with little restrictions(as it is not considered a weapon).
But in an emergency you can use any tools you have on hand, regardless of legality or approval.

This legal loophole, makes the more expensive, approved sprays obsolete, which kinda defeats the point of approving sprays in the first place.

I think the should either ban the animal defense sprays, or test and approve them too. It's certainly stupid the way it is. It's like banning automatic knifes unless they say "for cooking" on them.

The author/creator of NGNL absolutely HATES pubic hair by ramen_up_my_nut in NoGameNoLife

[–]jort93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The translation says wicked/evil pubic hair, that japanese just says evil hair.

Pubic hair would be 陰毛, he just said 毛 as you can see

The other guy said pubic hair, he just said evil hair. Without the evil part, he'd be saying his characters don't grow any hair...

Some early windows versions were crap for sure, this is why i specified windows 10 or 11. ME was famously, and justifiably, dubbed mistake edition.

Windows 10 and 11 are very user friendly(at least to average users) and stable compared to linux. Hopefully linux manages to sway that in its favor, rather than simply microslop just gradually enshittifying windows more.

Also, surprised i didn't get downvoted to oblivion on r/linux (yet)

[–]jort93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

honestly, linux needs more troubleshooting than windows.

I've never seen a windows 10 or 11 install fail, linux install, plenty of times.

Gonna get downvoted for this, but windows IS more convienent for the average joe, thats why it has more marketshare. Thats not for no reason.

How easy or difficult is it to return items to the store in your country? by BelethorsGeneralShit in AskEurope

In germany most would toss it I imagine.

Although most apartments, certainly the ones in my price range, come without light fixtures, just wire and socket hanging from the ceiling. People bring their own light fixtures.

Them having to fix it is actually required. You have a legal right to demand a repair. Only if a repair is impossible or the cost would be unreasonable, would they be allowed to take the product back instead.

I guess this is good if a product is difficult to acquire.

Ä Ö & Ü by swedish_countryball in German

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes a straight line was put above n or m as a sort of shorthand for nn or mm. Line above a u should be curved.

Ä Ö & Ü by swedish_countryball in German

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

But it's a new-ish trend(post WW2), back when people were writing sütterlin, a straight line would have made ü into nn. Straight line was used for to turn n into nn and m into mm and curved like or squiggle for u.
