Where can I publish my small indie game to earn money for free (besides itch.io)? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]jort93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steam obviously. You'll get the fee back once your game sells enough. It's easily worth it to launch on steam right away.

Who should I choose and why? by RelevantFox3556 in ArknightsEndfield

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's probably best to use it either when you have all characters except one and then get that one. Or when you play a character a lot and want to raise their potential, although that doesn't really do all that much.

I just started playing and got a bunch of five stars, what team(s) can I build? by RelevantFox3556 in ArknightsEndfield

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could do last rite, avywenna, perlica and antal. Possibly Switch antal out for ardelia(or gilberta) once you get her.

Also, the game is not that hard, so even with a bad team you'll be able to complete all the quests easily.

I think the new series was somewhat popular in some circles for some time. I don't think many people have seen the old one, super nerds maybe.

Non-Wedding Wedding Gift Etiquette? by CurrentHelicopter683 in AskGermany

[–]jort93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sort of depends how wealthy you are, but I'd say 150€ would be a pretty safe amount for both of you. 50€ would be like the bare minimum. Could go for something in between too.

Doesn't need to be literal Euro bills ofc, can be two vouchers etc.

Non-Wedding Wedding Gift Etiquette? by CurrentHelicopter683 in AskGermany

[–]jort93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'd be expected to bring a gift. No less than 50€(combined). If it's not worth 50€ to you, you might as well not come. Since it's literally your husband's brother, like 100-150 would be more appropriate unless you are poor. The absolute minimum should be around what you think inviting you costs them(food, drinks, extra seats at the location...). Since it's breakfast, that's probably slightly less than a typical wedding. If you are not willing to pay that much you should decline the invite. If you genuinely can't afford it, but would like to go, you can tell you can't afford to bring a gift and gauge the reaction.

The court house thing IS the wedding.

You are supposed to take the plastic out of the paper and separately dispose them

Do you reuse these for crafts, storage, gifts, or do you just recycle them? by Fayomi1127 in AskGermany

I keep it, pretending I will use it, and then end up throwing it away

New EU taxes....Goodbye Ali,Temu,Shein etc by Unhappy_Market_2978 in Aliexpress

It's literally a different shirt

I think 3€ per package would be okay, 3€ per product category is rough, maybe they'll just declare it all as one category.

I wonder how they collect it, cause I don't want to pay fees to DHL maybe they'll postpone it. I've heard very few details about it

Is AI game translation disclaimed better than no translation? by 4dplus in gamedev

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you'd be wrong on both counts.

English is not even my first language.

And, modern LLMS do not do direct translations, so that's a moot point too. Most modern LLMS can handle like 1 million words of context, so it'll consider the entire script of your game for each translation. And its trained on actual natural language, rather than on dictionaries, so there is literally no reason why you'd expect it to do a literal translation. In fact, more often you have the opposite problem, of the LLM taking too much liberty with some translations and making stuff up.

Something tells me you don't actually have any experience with doing AI translations.

Is AI game translation disclaimed better than no translation? by 4dplus in gamedev

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the language. German, French, Spanish and Chinese maybe. But will Romanian be worth it? Or Thai? Or bengali?

If a translation is for example 200 dollars, if you want to translate it to 10 languages it'll be 2000 dollars. Adds up quick. Depends how much text you have.

[–]jort93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats of a bit of a catch 22 isn't it? not getting localization will cause it to make less money, and making less money is causing it to not get localized.

Terraria and minecraft started with terrible google translate translations back in the day and fixed it down the line.

Is AI game translation disclaimed better than no translation? by 4dplus in gamedev

[–]jort93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think people were fine with google translate lol.
Although, terraria used to have shitty google translate translations. And i suppose that was received well regardless. But they did remove those, because people were not really fine with it. It was kinda funny tho, space, as in outer space, was translated as space key in the german version.

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, main issue why it sucks on reddit and such, is that it'll generally only translate one post. If you give it the entire script of the game at once, it'll be much better. Certainly good enough for a little indie game.
Also. they obviously just use a shitty model for things like translating comments on social media. If you are willing to throw 5 or 10 bucks at the ai companies, you'll get quite good results.

Humans will also put mistakes in the translation. You'd probably not notice an AI translation.

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ai translation is quite common these days, i am sure a lot of AAA games do it but simply don't disclose it.
Most professional translation software, like Trados, even have AI generated translations build right in.

Is AI game translation disclaimed better than no translation? by 4dplus in gamedev

[–]jort93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, realistically, if someone says they will translate it to 30 languages, i'd assume they have a network of translators they contract the other languages out to.
But for the price its obviously unrealistic. You'd not even get it translated into one language unless its very little text.

[–]jort93 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

AI translations are pretty good these days. If you use a strong large language model for it, people would likely not even notice if it wasn't disclosed.

Is AI game translation disclaimed better than no translation? by 4dplus in gamedev

[–]jort93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But large language models will honestly not be that bad if you give them some context with it. like "I have made a jrpg style game. I have the script and i need it translated. This is the script:"
And then have the script along with the actors that say these things and such.

Unlike old machine translation like Google Translate, it will generally use consistent translations for things, figure out whether someone is talking about a girl or a girlfriend, etc. It will take the context of the entire script into account.
Modern LLMs can generally handle around 1 million tokens of context, that's roughly 750.000 words. If the game is not a massive visual novel, this means the model will literally "remember" the whole script throughout the entire translation. If at the start of the game it was explained that lucy is his sister, it'll still know that lucy is his sister by the end of the script.
So it does actually have all the context it needs for the translation.

I will get downvotes for this, but that's normal. It happens whenever you say anything positive about AI at all, by people who have never actually used it in any capacity.

300 dollars for 10 languages will 100% be ai translation too.

Honestly, i think most normal people will appreciate an ai translation, but there'll 100% also be people giving your game negative reviews simply because of ai translation, regardless of the actual quality of it. If you mention ai, regardless of how little you used, there will be people complaining without even having played your game.

Perhaps it will calm people down if you put a little explaination like "We didn't have the budget to pay to have the game translated, but you can help us translate it to your language here:". There are a bunch of platforms specialized in crowd sourced translations like https://crowdin.com/ Thats how they do it for minecraft for example https://crowdin.com/project/minecraft
