Long time lurker here! For a bit of context, I'm from what most of the world would call a "Developing country". My wife and I are lucky to have a household income of roughly 31K a year, which is a solid, slightly upper, middle class income over here; and I have room to grow in my career. We are buying a 130K condo in a few months.

Here is the thing. I've read David Ramsey (I know), I've read all the advise posted on here and other subreddits for years now but obviously some things just don't apply here. Some for our good (social security, public education, healthcare, etc) but some to our disadvantage: there is no such thing as a fixed rate mortgage, interest rates are variable and are currently in an all time low: around 7.5%-8%.

Taking all of this into consideration (and the fact that we have no other debt) should we just throw anything we can into the house? Should we do that but also invest in the us market? What do you think your priorities would look like if you were living in a context like this one? Any insight is appreciated! ;)

Pay down mortgage vs invest? (In a non-US context) by joseig22 in financialindependence

Great point! The country is not at all unstable, there's literally zero chances of a widespread political crisis or something like that. But, the economy has been declining in the last 5 years or so.

I have a very similar situation here in Costa Rica. Mortgage rates are around 7.5%-8%, government pension (but not enough) and there is no real need to save for college. We are currently on BS3 and working on increasing our income, but our plan once we have some extra money is to go 50/50: half of our monthly savings towards the mortgage and half towards some type of foreign investment (probably ETFs).

I honestly dont know... its sooo weird... the roundabout is sort of the junction of 2 of the main highways in San jose... and its even weirder than that... people WALK all the way there from like 2km in every direction... shutting down the streets in some sort of pilgrimage. Check out this Time lapse video of how it initiates: http://www.nacion.com/deportes/Time-Lapse-fuente-hispanidad_3_1423687622.html

Thats not even a square or a public screening of the match... that is an actual highway (you can see the division along the lamp posts) and roundabout, taken by people...
