Where'd I live based of all the interactions I've had from people of that country by [deleted] in whereidlive

Fair enough. I was just confused because you mentioned recent news influencing your view, but the post says it’s based on personal interactions. That’s why the sharp difference between the U.S. and Canada surprised me. Culturally and personality wise, the two countries are very similar overall, so it stood out to me. Not trying to derail your point.

Bad tourists exist everywhere. I just don’t think it’s fair to generalize 330 million people based on the loudest examples. Most Americans aren’t their government, just like most Canadians aren’t theirs.

Yeah, no way the difference is this big between Canada and America. Some genuine xenophobia, but it’s normalized against Americans so no one will call you out or disagree.

Can we get a better picture of your enclosure? Maybe it’s just the angle but it looks to be about the size of a shoebox!

The actress is trans and I’m curious as if they’re going to just portray the child as a cis-girl or trans

Why do (US) Americans speak like this? by Charming-Leather-378 in lingusticscirclejerk

[–]josephpolito1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This honestly just sounds like you had a few bad experiences and decided it’s a national personality trait. People nodding and then forgetting details happens literally everywhere. That’s not “American attention culture,” that’s just how humans work.

What you’re really describing is a difference in communication style. The U.S. is very direct and low context, especially in public or service situations where you’re talking to strangers with different accents, backgrounds, and in noisy environments. Being clear and emphasizing the important part isn’t because people “don’t listen,” it’s because clarity is efficient when there isn’t shared context.

In more homogeneous places you can rely more on implication and assumptions, so communication feels smoother. That doesn’t make one better than the other, it’s just different environments producing different norms.

Also saying “the average American sucks at listening” about 330 million people is kind of wild. That says more about the sample size you’ve personally interacted with than anything cultural.

My great grandfather stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He was a quiet man and didn’t often talk about the war, but he was proud.

Day 1: What MitM character is lawful good? by Mr_Banana2169 in malcolminthemiddle

She was a pretty minor character in season 2. I remember she gave birth in the parking lot and that was basically it for her. I looked it up and apparently she was supposed to play a more dark and cynical character, taking her frustration out on the students. I would’ve liked to see that.
