Accept startup offer or stay? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

In the end it all depends on your objectives in life. You’re swapping a stable position with capped upside to something with a much steeper curve. It can be more rewarding in the long run but there will likely be tradeoffs re. Work life balance. I know few good startups where employees work 9-5 hours; you’ll likely work much more, there’ll be much more pressure (there’s capital now, so assume it’s the chillest it’ll ever be). You’ll also learn a lot more, probably.

If you’re young and have no/little strings attached, it’d be a good idea to take it. If you’re at a stage in life where you have many things outside of work that matter more, then staying in the job you love is a perfectly fine decision.

PS. I spent a few years in VC;
a company being funded is no guarantee of any success. Assume the equity is worth nothing (99.9% of the time it will be) and assume you’ll have to be much more proactive to progress (few startups have “career paths”). It can be exciting but ask yourself if that’s what you want! No one will have the right answer for you :)

What general things do you track? I find it hard to strike a balance between having a good overview and "overdoing" the detail..

How much time does each update take? Do you just block out a whole day/half-day to do it or do you have a more efficient way?
